Oil Filters?

I have read a few Do's and a lot of Dont's
about some oil filter brands. I will most
likely be using the Fleetguard and possibly
the AMSOIL filter, but have not heard how
the Mobil 1 M1-403 for a 24 valve diesel
rates among the experienced Cummins Diesel
owners? Is this one "OK" or what if any are
the problems.

Benn using the Amsoil SDF 80 since I had a 95,98 and now 2000. never had any problems. Change filter at 5000 and oil/filter at 10000. Don't know about the Mobile filter.

I have used the Mobil synthetic filter two or three times in my previous '94. They seem well made, nice paint job on casing, however its what's inside thats important and i haven't a clue. The mobil filter is more expensive than Fleetguard.

All of the other oil changes I used the Fleetguard LF3552 MicrGlas filter. The only reason I used the Mobil filter was because I could get it at a local chain parts house on the weekend. I have to get the fleetguard from a bulk dealer.

I now use the Fleetguard Stratapore filter (don't remember number) in 2001 ETH. I purchased the 4/2/1 Fleetguard filter kit from Geno's garage.

I now use the Fleetguard Stratapore filter (don't remember number) in 2001 ETH.

The best Fleetguard for our Rams is the Stratapore, model LF-3894.
I've heard the Mobil filter gets down to 10 microns, which is fantastic (IF TRUE). One post said M1 filters very strong, burst pressure over 600 psig; another post said the M1 filters sometimes come apart at the casing crimp. I'll continue with the LF-3894 until I can get some confirmation on micron rating and strength of the M1 filter - lots of opinions on the internet, but FACTS are harder to find...

The FG3894 also filters down to 10 microns. You can email Fleetguard and they can give you the specs, but I think it was 30% effiient at 10 microns, or something close to that.

Champion Labs makes the Mobil 1 filter. It is 98% efficient at 10 microns on a single pass. I have never heard anything about the Mobil 1 filters having seam problems. But I will try to find out more about this.

Call Champion and they will give you all the information you want. Then do the same with Fleetguard and you can make your decision between the two.

Please, no one take this the wrong way and this is just my opinion. Just because Cummins owns Fleetguard and they make their own filters for the Cummins engines does not mean that they make the best filters available for our engines. The fact that they have had flters comming apart do to high start up pressures in cold weather makes me very uneasy. That tells me that the filters burst pressures are just barely higher than the normal pressures the engines see during start up in cold weather. The next problem I have is why do they have to have so many different filters and numbers. Different filters for the 12 valve versus 24 valve. You would think that they would make just one filter for our trucks and build it like a tank so that you would never have to worry about potential failures and getting the right filter from them would be easy. Instead of engineering the filters just barely above the requirements of the engines so that they can make more money on the filters while being able to sell them at a competitive price with all the other filters that are available.

Would you guys not pay 15 to 20 dollars for the BE ALL, END ALL of oil filters. I know I would. Something in the range of 10 micron capability and 1000 psi burst pressure and 500 psi or so working pressure.

With the research that I have done and the information that I have been able to gather here on the TDR (which I am very gratefull for), I will stick with the Mobil 1 403 flter. It just has alot better numbers. Hopefully fleetguard will build that tank filter in the near future and quit playing around with making small improvements just to get by.

This is not intended as a flame nor am I trying to start anything. This is just my opinions on what I have seen posted and the research that I have done.

Using the Mobil 1 filters would be nice as they are available at Autozone. I'm also going to contact them to see if they can special order Mobil Delvac.

I called Fleetguard a while back to find out once and for all which filter was the right one for my 97 3500. I was told that there were 4 filters. A standard and a Microglass(?) for the 12 valve and a standard and a Stratpore(?) for the 24 valve. They told me that the 12 valve filters were cracking when used on the higher revving 24 valve so they made the newer filters with a heavier case. They said that the 12 valve filters (I don't remember the numbers-3552?) were being phased out and that everyone could use the newer filters on either motor. I currently use the 3894.
