Oil from vent hose normal?

I have a 1999 4X4 LB auto. On the front of the motor is a vent hose that ends just above the trans cooler lines near the steering gear box. I have noticed a fair amount of oil venting out of this line. Not extreme but it does stain the driveway. It makes quite a mess on the front suspension parts. The dealer told me diesel motors do not create vacuum it is normal. He told me this is part of having a diesel truck. The newer trucks have a catch can on them that I guess gets drained with oil changes.



I just don’t think it is normal to have this much oil venting from this hose. Do I just need to add a catch can.

My 99 does coat the frt susp. steering box etc. with a coat of oil from the tube. The newer CTDs have a catch can that you should be able to retrofit. I haven't got around to it yet. If you drive off road or at steep down hill angles this can contribute to the seepage. Some seepage is normal, if you have high mileage you may see more as blowby increases with wear. Do not plug the tube as this will pressurize the crankcase and blow oil past the seals.

On my 96' I took a small pill bottle (asprin or vitamin) and drilled a small hole through the upper rim of bottle on both sides then drilled through the hose, slid a plastic zip tie through and locked it in place. No more drips on the drive way. BTW: the drip was very minimal until I switched to synthetic oil, then it dripped more. But never lost enough oil that I had to add oil between changes.

Guess what! They removed the catch can for 2003. They must have saved a bundle on that one.

Anyone have a spare laying around that they don't need?

With over 8,000 miles on it, my truck has not dripped once in my driveway. My 97 was always leaving a few drops. Seems like system for the breather tube works well on the new trucks, at least it does on mine.



Tparker, you might try posting that question on the 2nd gen engine forum since you have a 1999 truck.
