Last night I thought I would unhook the elbow coming off the turbo housing to see how it looked inside. There was a layer of fine dust so I took off all the boots and pipes to the intercooler and cleaned the dust (dirt/grime sticking to the walls, no oil) from them and then decided to check the other side, from the IC to the engine. I found no dust on this side but oil. The insides of the boots were covered in it and it was collecting in the v dips on the boots. :( I cleaned it out, blew air through the IC and put everything back together. Any idea where the oil came from? I had a K&N for a few years and drive at times in very dusty conditions so attribute the dust to the filter, but dust on one side of the IC and oil on the other? TIA

oil in the intake

I believe that the only thing that would/could put oil in the intake is the turbo. Maybe something about the air flow lets oil collect in the v of the boot. 100k miles on it would allow time for even a very minor turbo weep to accumulate enough to see.

How much oil is used between changes. Your mileage/wear would not account for any noticable amount between changes so judge from recent experience on oil use as to whether it is a significant and current problem or a minor issue.

You should check the play in the turbo shaft...

Grab the nut on the front and wiggle it side to side. There is an acceptable amount of movement but it is very little. It must not come close to touching the sides of the inlet, if it does do not drive it again till you replace or repair the turbo.

Next try to push the shaft front to back. In this area there must be NO slop.

If you find any at all you are developing wear in the thrust washer/bearing area and it is on it's way out... now all this will often be accompanied by the turbo "pulling " oil past it's internal seal and pushing it thru the IC. This is not good, and if severe enough can cause 'run on' because the engine will begin to consume and burn the oil itself. Admittedly it has to be alot of oil but it's a sign of not good things coming it this is happening.

pb...

Thanks for the response. No oil used between changes but I will watch for any usage. As for the shaft, no noticable play but if I spin it, it only goes about a quarter of a spin before stopping, does that mean anything? I hope the turbo is not on the way out. PB, I make frequent trips to Vancouver, I would like to stop by Piers to 'pick your brain' if it's ok with you. (I know, what I find in there might scare me but I'll take the chance).

does that mean anything

With the turbo cool, it won't spin on much. It is a "friction" bearing like the rods or mains and not a ball bearing. As the pastor said: "It must not come close to touching the sides of the inlet, if it does do not drive it again till you replace or repair the turbo. "

What will happen there is that the intake houseing of the turbo can shed aluminum into the cylinders. Now this is just my theory but I have seen the result of what I am stateing. As the micro particles of aluminum are burned they apparently become aluminum oxide, which as you may know is a very good abrasive. This condition will quickly lead to a totally ruined engine. I have experienced this with Deere and International engines. Whatever is happening, heed the pastors warning as to NO touching.

Not touching? Watch the oil. Run it.

turbo/oil

i checked no side to side play or back and forth on the turbo propeller i have attacked pics. . could it be a seal or just a gasket???? any input greatly appreciated.

If you got oil in the piping its time for a new turbo. Seal on the shaft is gone for whatever reason.

Upgrade time!!!! Oo. Oo.

If its not to bad tomorrow(snowing here again) im going to try and take that off and see what i can see with the elbow off. . I truly didn't want to hear that but figured there might be something i could do to fix it... wondering if i have a spare laying around LOL... lets see nope. . only thing i have spare laying around is turbo from military engine(LDS engine) what would u guy suggest, used or new, i have no clue what new costs are.

You can also buy a rebuild kit for about $80 or so. Maybe less on e bay I see them oin there all the time. Rebuilding an H1C is easy.

Check e bay for turbos too. Search for Holset and you'll see a slew of them.

If you don't mind a little fab work, a HE351 works nicely on these engines. An HE351VGT will also work quite well. Depends on what your plans are and how much you want to spend.

JLeonard/Cerber thanks for the heads up the rebuilt kit was what i was hoping for that is in my price range right now. It snowed another 1 1/2 last nite so nothing much out, except we still have snow from 3 weeks ago. . had 21inches here.

Crapola!!! actually it was a link to a turbo kit from ebay. . As long as it says H1C am i correct to say thats what i need. . i found another one on ebay that has a longer auction time, around 40$, also i will most likely need to remove both sections where it bolts to the exhaust side of the turbo... . ?

Yes.

I applogize for my wordiness. :-laf

Actually if you google Holset you will get to their website and find diagrams and specs that will help you in your rebuild. Mark the compressor nut position relative to the shaft for orientation as that will help maintain balance upon reassembly... or so I've read. Good luck.

Thanks my friend, i dont' know when i will get to do this, with the weather and looks like its set in the past 3 days has averaged below zero with the windchill actual temps were 13, 3, and 10 this morning brrrrrrrr, hopefully she will hang on til then, will baby it and take it easy. . I would put in the basement but i have my car in there with a bad freeze plug im trying to get. . if i ever get the dodge in the basement look out LOL... it will be one thing after another...
