I have a oil leak between the vacuum and the power steering pump.

I removed the vacuum pump and started to install a new seal kit and found that the entire cavity of the pump was filled with engine oil. Is this normal and where does the air exit the pump?

I have been having low vacuum pressure for some time.

Any out there know how they work?

I believe the oil in there is normal, henceforth the leaking seal. When i replaced my seal it was losing 2 qts oil in 13-1500 miles...

i hear that the seal leaking is quite normal too, that is, it happens enough. Exactly how they work, not sure, have to read up on it later :D

The vacuum pump is made to have oil running through it. There is an oil pressure line coming right into the bottom of the pump off the engine block. The oil and vacuum both exit out the front of the pump into the gear housing on the front of the engine. This is a very common leak. The vacuum pump is a vane type pump and works off of centrifugal force to keep the vanes out tight against the housing. The oil lubes and helps seal everything up.
