I just drove a 97 1T CTD 4X4 to try to buy. It did not get warm in the cab then the engine got hot. (190 +) Investigation found oil (sludge) in the radiator and overflow. After adding water to the radiator it started to bubble out sludge (Grey crap) out of the radiator (cap off). There was bubbles of air in the radiator even after a few minutes of running. I took the tube off the head that goes to the radiator and a steady stream of water and antifreeze came out ( no sludge??) I would love to buy the truck but I don't want to replace the motor. Someone help me figure this out. . Thanks

Mike

That one is beyond me. I just learn the symptoms. Oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil pan, high pressure in the radiator/way overfilled overflow reservoir at shutdown, coolant leaking down the side of the engine below the head, really erratic temp guage. Going through all this with the 'ol lady's 94 mustang. I'm sure someone will chime in shortly about proper diagnosis.

In the mean time, look for threads with cracked block, or do a search for head gasket.

You can take the truck to a shop that can to a cooling system pressure test to make the determination if the head gasket is actually blown. that is the only way i know to truly tell, but its going to cost you:(

I think Napa has a chemical test kit that uses a coolant sample to check for combustion gasses, my dad bought one several years ago and I don't think it cost to much.

start the truck when it is cold, after 30seconds or so if the upper hose has built up pressure and feels stiff it is the head gasket leaking cylinder pressure into the coolant.

Oil in the water and its all mine!!

Well I bought it. Now all I need is a block, radiator, pitman arm, and the cruise control fixed!! It sure is pretty sitting there though!:p

Oil in the water

Don't forget the air bubbles. I think that is significant. There is only one place I know of to get air!!!! and thats bad!!It is at the mechanics shop for testing. I'll let you guys know. Thanks
