Hey,i changed the air filter today and noticed a very small amount of oil in the lip,in the turbo,on the intake side facing the front of the truck. Slight,meaning,1/3 of a teaspoon. Should i be concerned or is this normal? Could this be a seal in the turbo? What is the potential outcome if not taken apart and repaired? Thanks

How dirty was your air cleaner and the miles on the turbo. A little is not bad. Is the shaft loose? The worst potential outcome is the seal fail's completely and fills the intercooler up with oil and truck runs away.

My truck tends to rev up a couple RPMs if its at idle for a couple minutes, then goes back down to regular idle speed then goes back up for a few seconds..... Posted teh problem before but no good replies

Thanks!

Ian

I noticed you have a K&N air filter. Some guys running the K&N air filters have had this problem, I did but I switched to a BHAF. When I changed the oil a few weeks ago I still had a little oil where the silencer ring used to be so I am keeping an eye on mine to see if it comes back. Did not notice any movement in the shaft. Gas engine turbos have seals since the engine has vacuum when its not building boost. As I remember, a lot of diesel application turbos don't even have seals because they never have vacuum so they won't suck oil into the intake. If the shaft is loose oil pressure psi is higher than boost psi and could pump oil into the intake. I have had the BHAF for a few months now so I would think mine should have cleared up since the air intake elbow appeared to be clean and dry.

Trash Dog... . The air filter was a little dirtier than expected,113000 miles on motor. There was very slight movement, maybe 50Kths. What do you mean when you say "runs away"?

GBobbitt... Thanks,

I would be willing to bet that that oil you're seeing is being pulled from your K&N filter. I had the same problem. Most oiled filters will do this.

Oiled filters will do this only when they are over-oiled. I ran a K&N in my old truck for more than 200,000 miles and never had a trace of oil in the intake. The old truck is still around with over 260,000 miles and still runs like new. So the old "you're going to wear the enigine out!" doesn't worry me too much either.

That was my first thought, the filter was'nt overoiled and the intake hose was as dry as can be. I smelled and tasted it,old amsoil for sure.

i was told that if your air filter is dirty, the suction of the turbo is such that is has enough power to pull oil past its seals and into the intake of the turbo due to it not having the proper amount of air flow, any truthfulness to that?

if the motor runs away

if you have a manual stand on the brakes and throw it in gear, if you have an auto i sopose you could throw it into drive and stand on the brakes, but thats not real healthy for the transmission but better the transmission than the engine i guess
