My AC vents quit changing (defrost only) I suspected vacuum leak, and found not only leaky deteriorated rubber "t" connectors but engine OIL inside the lines!

Can I buy OEM type rubber vac line connectors?

Does the oil damage the vac motors?

I can hear a vacuum whistle when the engine is running now from inside the dash somewhere, what could that be?

(Dealer says I need new vac. pump, tear up dash, replace ALL vacuum motors, replace all vacuum lines etc. $1500+)

Most good motorparts stores like NAPA, etc. , carry the vacuum connectors you need at very reasonable prices.

vacuum recall

The TSB and recall give a range of engine numbers affected, although mine is a 97 it is just out side that range. (5629XXXX was the cutoff, mine's 5630XXXX) Anyway, I believe there are alot more trucks affected than they let on, the repair in the TSB is HUGE I can see why they limited it.

How could they be so stupid to allow engine oil such easy access to the vacuum system?

No 4wd, no cruise,no a/c :(

Gifford,

Since your truck was close to the engine serial numbers affected in the TSB, check your vacuum pump to see if the check valve is there. If it's not, this may give you some ammunition to show the dealer and see if he'll warranty it.

I guess the missing check valve on the vacuum pump is what causes the problem.

With no check valve on your pump, engine just barely out of the targeted effected engines, I'd think this would be repaired under warranty. If it was not, I'd talk to a lawyer.

Im just gonna hijack the thread for one second. My vents quit changing a while back and I'm not quite sure where to start looking. I also have defrost only. Where should i start? Thanks

You have the same problem i bet. My 96 had it and everything was replaced under the recall. It was for 7 years unlimited milage. The cruise control will be affected sooner or later. Everything that is vacum operated is subject to oil contamination when this happens. The default position for the AC system when the vacum is not present is too the defrost vents.

I had the same problem with my truck. I had to fight with the dealer to get the service done but they finaly did it because it was a SAFTEY RECALL. The dealer should do it for free. I found some info on this site http://www.alldata.com/recall/make/Dodge_Truck.html

in regards to our trucks. . I cannot remember the name of the other site that actualy sites legal aspect of the safty recall. I hope this help a little
