Have a 98 24v 3500 stock in the shop with an oil leak on the driver side. Not sure where the leak is. Haven't studied it enough yet. Was wondering if there were any known leak areas for this engine. Driver side, power steering pump is covered along with everything else down the frame.

Thanks

Thomas

The crankcase vent comes off the timing cover and goes down below the steering gear in that area? Does a pretty good job of coating that side with oil over time. bg

I was checking mine the other day and noticed a little dampness on the drivers side at one of the freeze plugs. I hope that its just one of those things that come with more mileage but never is a major concern, it gets a little damp and then stops. If anyone else has had this problem let me know and what conclusions or fixes have you come to...

Make sure there is no obstruction in the crankcase oil breather. Excessive crankcase pressure can cause oil leakage at the vacuum pump - assuming yours has one...

vacuum pump seal

My comments are predicated on you having a vacuum pump. I had the same problem and it was aggrevating. Turned out to be the vaccum pump seal between the vacuum pump and the power steering pump. Seal kit with tools to replace the seal and a 30 min dvd showing the procedure were less than $50. 00 --- new pump from dc is over $1000. 00 (they say it is not repairable). Seal kit been in about 1800 miles and not a drop.

Thanks for the replies. I will let you know what it is. John, where did you get the kit in the event I need one?

It's my understanding from another thread that DC now provides and installs vacuum pump seal kits when needed, rather than just replacing the whole pump - worth checking into - but that CD would sure be a help too...
