I was underneath my truck changing the oil this afternoon and noticed some oil dripping off of the bellhousing. :{ Looks to be motor oil. I'm thinking it might be the rear main seal. Why in the world would something leak oil with only 35,000 miles on it. My Toyota T100 didn't develop its first oil leak until 180,000 miles. I am kind of disapointed if I am going to start leaving spots this soon. Does anyone know if this would be covered under the 100,000 mile engine warranty or do I need to get it in before I turn over 36,000. I am in the middle of packing and moving and don't want to be without my truck.

Same thing happened to my truck; notice it at about 35K miles... dealer said the oil pan gasket was faulty and replaced it. It looked like the oil oozed past the pan gasket at the back of the pan and the air flow blew it onto the bell housing.

Anyway, the dealer said they replace the pan gasket, but it still does the same thing now at 89K miles. Mine doesn't drip onto the driveway so I just ignore it and change the erl every 5K miles.

Mine had been in my garage about a half an hour when I noticed a HUGE oil leak, with oil all over the floor. It had 90 miles on when it got back to the dealer. It turned out to be a missing o-ring, on the back of the block somewhere. I think where the cam is. The transmission had to come out for access. I was pretty bummed, but it turned out alright. No leaks since then. Good luck.

Sure its NOT from the blow by hose???

The oil is on the bottom of the bellhousing. Could it really be from that. Crawled under there today and again there is oil on the bottom of the bellhousing. I am going to call the dealer this week and check which warranty will cover it.

Well its covered 3/36 and 7/70 and the Cummins 100k. SOOO take her in,LOL. Most oil on these engines is always the blow by tube. Once in a great while a rear main or rear cam seal etc.

I thought my rear main was leaking and even ordered the new seal prior to doing the clutch. When the trans was out I could see the crank seal was dry. I snugged up the oil pan bolts and all is dry now. A few minutes with a socket (10mm I think) and an extension should help!

i had a oil leak starting in front of the engine and ending at the fly wheel cover . in 600 miles ,i lost 3 qts of oil. i took it to a car wash and after going crazzy for 2 weeks of trying to find the leek ,it turned out the vacuum pump seal was lesking. i replaced the seal and no more leaks. i purchased the repair parts from fixnrams.com 877 349 6726

Well I am going to take it in on Monday to see where the leak is coming from and to get it fixed. Anything else I should have checked or replaced before the 3/36 warranty ends. My ball joints are fine and I have had the door seals replaced.

Thanks, Joe

oil leak on my 05 too

I noticed the bell housing was dark with oil but not wet, a few months ago. I asked the dealership oil change guy what he thought it could be from while we were both under the truck as he was draining the oil. He just shruugged his shoulders and said "ahh. . , it's probably nothing. " and that was that . But now, as of yesterday the bell housing is actually wet and the oil pan gasket looks like it's leaking real bad . No drips of oil on the pavement any place and I never seem to down on the oil dipstick when I check it. But tuesday she's going in to the dealership. Thought this was a tuff Cummins engine. . Geeez. just over 20,000miles on the odometer...

Still cannot find

When my truck was at the dealer a couple months ago getting the oil leak looked at they couldn't figure out where it is coming from so they added a dye to the oil. I took it back a couple weeks ago and still could not figure it out. It is a very small leak and does not leave any chevy marks on the ground so I am not going to worry about it now. The dealer told me it would be covered under the 100k engine warranty if it got worse later on.

some have had problems with the rocker cover gasket leaking??? maybe try popping the plastic cover off and retorquing the 6 bolts that hold the cover down [i don't think the spacer under the rocker cover has its own separate hardware bolting it to the head, i think it is just squeezed between the head and the rocker cover?]

The rocker housing is held down by its own hardware(eight 10MM bolts). The injection harness connectors must also be unplugged and unscrewed from the injector tops as this harness runs thru the rocker housing. Yes, many early hpcr engines leaked here-replacing the rubber gasket always stopped the leak.

My 2004. 5 has started leaking oil and I found it to be the blow by tube. Is it normal for the Cummins to have enough blow by to force oil out the tube? My 3500 dually has 40K on it and I do not abuse it.
