I checked my oil 2 fuelings back and it was 2 qt's low. I topped it off that evening. 550 miles later I check it again at my next fueling and it is 2 qt's low. There aren't many spots on my driveway, not enough to alert me. But... lately I have noticed more exhaust smell when stopped. I had the breather valve replaced 5k miles ago... it helped with exhaust smell in the cab for a while... but now its back.

I bought the truck used in 11/07 with 79000 miles. It seems now that the truck has been run pretty hard. Should have bought a new one while I could have gotten a 5. 9l.

Any ideas?

You've got to determine whether you're burning it or leaking it. Considering the rate of consumption, my bet is you're leaking it.

Check the underside of the truck. Is it coated with a film of oil?

The back of the rocker box is a common spot for an oil leak, so check and see if oil is running down the back of the engine.

2 qts in 550 miles I belive would leave a spot on the driveway. Not sure though. If the underside of the truck is clean check the end of the exhaust pipe for oily sticky soot. It could be blowing it trough the turbo. I had a leaky bottom turbo on a set of twins I had on my 05. It lost a couple qts per fillup. The exhaust had oil all over it leaked out of every flange in the pipe.

New block and turbo on the way!

Turns out the oil was blowing through the turbo. I never noticed... thought it was SMARTY Smoke. The turbo has a lot of play and has started to rub. Dealer is a piece has gotten into the engine and causing what spots I do see.

Anyway, $100 and 2 days without my truck isn't bad compared to what it could have been.

Just a note... all those that doubt Bob W's claim of the indetectable SMARTY is wrong for doing so. I am a perfect example!
