Guys, I need help. My wife car is in the shop and my Dodge is loosing oil by the quart, FAST. It appears to be leaking from in between the vacuum pump and the power steering pump. I called the Dodge dealer and he said a new pump was the only way to fix it, $2200. 00. I called Cummins and they said the same thing but only $1023. 00. I read about this problem before and don't remember anything about it being way expensive. There must be a repair that I can on this. I going out to the shop now to pull the steering pump and vacuum pump off. I'll come back in then and hope somebody has good news for Me. Thanks in advance. Rusty Mule

sounds like the o-ring on the shaft has went on ya, i was thinking the same thing their is a fix and if not mistaken isn't what the prices you were quoted. Can someone chime in here that has had this problem and knows more about it...

I've seen rebuild kits on ebay for 60 bucks... . search some old threads. My power brakes dont work for 5 seconds on startup so i think my pump is getting weak. I am soon going to rebuild the pump, anyone post their experiances on it?

Poke HERE for one option ($60). Comes with an instructional video on DVD. I think I've seen others post that you can buy a repair kit from Cummins for a lot cheaper.

Contact member CPFF (Cummins Powered Fast Ford). He sells seal kits with instructions. He invented the dowl pin jig and makes a nice fan wrench set as well.

Check out this thread Vacuum Pump Rebuild Part Numbers You can buy a rebuild kit from Cummins for $10-15 or from a dealer for $65 and it's the very same kit. I put this kit in 40,000 miles ago and all is well.

The Dodge part number is: 05140342AA and they get about $65 for the kit

The Cummins part number is: 4089742

when you say chicago rawhide do you mean the company or is that what its made of... do you have a contact number or a website, as my '00 has the same problem has for some time i just haven't gotten up the marbles to attemt it in fear of messing something up.

Vacuum pump oil leak

Fixed it today. $3. 83 for seal and 2 O-rings. Take out drivers side battery, air tube from intercooler to intake manifold, loosen powersteering pump but leave it on, don;t remove any powersteering hoses, remove little bracket to the block, remove vacuum hose, and remove two 15 millamother bolts holding the v-pump to the timing cover. Swing the assembly clockwise and you got it. Leave the powersteering there, remove just the V-pump. Put it back and no leaks.

sounds good rustymule, sounds like the oring replacement on the 12V is alot easier than the 24V, the '00 is the one i have leaking...

Thanks dieseldemon

I will say it again and again the 35$ for the TDR subscription is priceless... if the other owners of ford, chevy, and the rest had this kind of set up we have the dealers would have to practically shut down their service departments.

I want to thank Cerberusiam and Rlyons for their help on the 92 i purchased last monday (as they are the 2 i have been in contact with by email), had brake, odometer and drag link bar problems thanks to them and the other members whom pitched in with priceless information... :D

shouldn't the leak be visible while the truck is running? my truck is leaking ALOT of oil,,, it's all over everything from the pump down,,, well it starts about at about where the timing pin is,,, i have started and ran the truck while under it with a shop light,, it won't leak a drip,,,, i'm thinking maybe it's the pump supply line and only leaks when i'm on the fuel hard? thoughts?
