So I've been checking my oil level at least once a day, and I notice it's just slightly below the MAX level on the dipstick. According to the owner's manual, no oil needs to be added as long as you're within the hatched "safe" area on the stick. Bottom of the "safe" area is 2 quarts low.

It this guidance from the owner's manual good? Should I add oil as needed to maintain a MAX level? What is everyone else doing?

They've had a 2 qt. add forever, so did my old '86 Phord. I sure wouldn't worry about it being just below the max. I have never had to add oil between changes in any of my CTD's since 1994.

Keep it in the specified area on the dipstick. It's very important not to exceed the safe level. You can get to the point where the crank is splashing the oil and aerating (sp?) it causing it to foam up. Once that happens you'll have bigger problems than being a quart low.
