Need some help with the oil level in my new 6. 7. After sitting all night, I checked the oil level in the morning and it was about 1/2" above full. Should I drain some out or is this ok? Thanks.

I wouldn't be comfortable with it. I know if it was my truck I'd get underneath and loosen the drain plug and let about a quart out of it. Better to be a quart low than a quart over.

Check the oil level a few minutes after you shut down for the accurate reading. After it has sat all night, all of the oil has drained down from the upper parts and will not be the accurate "running level". A 1/2" though is a lot. That would concern me if true. Almost sounds like someone changed the oil and threw in the full requirement, but failed to change out the oil filter??

Mine shows over full also. Even more disturbing is that the oil is black and appears thinned a little. It only has 300 miles on it. How does the oil look on your dipstick? Anything abnormal besides being overfull? I posted my concern in this forum . Hope to hear good news... like break in oil is black... :confused:wishful thinking??

Thanks

That would be cause for concern, as there have been reports of injectors staying open, and overfueling, which then causes oil thinning. Does the oil smell like raw fuel?

RTFM:Check Oil on cold engine or 15 minutes AFTER shutdown!!!

Define a "few minutes. " Per my 2005 manual: "The best time to check the oil level is before starting the engine after it has been parked overnight. When checking oil after operating the engine, first ensure the engine is full at operating temperature, then wait at least 15 minutes after engine shutdown to check the oil. " See under "Maintaining your vehicle" on P343 or thereabouts.

Always wipe off the dipstick first, then stick it in, pull back out, to check the oil. This prevents a false reading, cold or hot.

I've always considered a reading after sitting overnight to be the most accurate, I wouldn't want any more oil than the full mark when checked that way.

The Army has 8V71s in some of it's combat vehicles, and they called for an oil check after running, but the TM said to wait 20 minutes after shutdown before oil level check.
