There's a big oil line (I think) that runs behind the oil filter and goes down to the oil pan.



What's that line for?



It looks like mine is leaking, it's really gunked up with oil. Thinking I might replace it next time I do an oil change, so I'm looking for a nomenclature, or part #.
 
It's probably the turbo oil drain back tube. It has a hose at the end where it connects to the oil pan. Check to see if the clamps are loose. I don't know the part # or I. D of the hose.
 
I have had a leak there too. I found that the bolts (10mm I think) at the top flange had loosened up. Tightened them up and no more problems. Check the band clamps too.

Yeah that's the one. Is there a gasket between the flange and turbo? I'll probably pull that whole line off when I change my oil and clean it up, get a new rubber hose as well. I'm not sure where it's leaking from since it's really gunked up.

Yes, there is a gasket between the the drain tube flange/turbo.



Make sure you buy silicone hose... the drain oil from the turbo will eat through normal rubber in short order. Truck parts dealers will have this stuff by the foot. The OEM clamps can usually be reused, but if you buy new ones be sure that the entire inside diameter of them is smooth. Normal worm drive hose clamps will damage the soft silicone hose material.

Your local Cummins parts counter would have about 50 of those gaskets in stock and *should* have the silicone hose. Your best bet for the hose is to take the piece off your truck and measure it to get all the dimensions. Don't even try to find a Cummins part number for the hose...

Ok. I was hoping I could get the hose before pulling it apart since the truck is my daily driver and the Cummins dealer is 50 miles from here.
 
I just emailed a friend of mine that had to replace that hose on his '99 ISB. I think he wrote down all the specs on it including dimensions, where he got it, price, etc.

Wow - that's a ripoff. Go to a heavy-duty truck place and give them these specs:

3" long, ID=7/8", OD=1-3/8" (must be silicone hose!)



It might cost you $5. (... which is still a ripoff for 3" of hose... but a lot better than $20+)

I'm not trying to start an argument but It wouldn't have to be silicone hose as long as it is made for oil. I work in a truck shop and we sell both the very expensive (over priced) silicone hose as well as a black fuel/oil hose whitch is about the same price as heater hose. Just food for thought

Ive seen a brand name of either Grote or gates cant remember which. I used some Green outer with a orange interior silicone with some bailing wire to get my oil drain line to work when I switched to a s300 type turbo setup and the stock 12V drain tube was throwing interference with the compressor housing and wastegate actuator rod. Cost about $20 but I didnt want to mess around with it again. The downfall to the silicone stuff is if you make a bend in it it kinks easily hence why I needed some bailing wire thrown in the mix :D
 
I'm not sure who makes the silicone hose, It's supplied to us from International Navistar (witch is one reason i say it's overpriced). And if i'm not mistaken tiffco supplies the black fuel/oil hose.
