my friend has a 97 24 valve 3500 that i leaking about 3 quarts of oil a week. the oil is coming from the front of engine, looks like the front plate around fan area. it only has about 50,000 miles. the dodge dealer quoted him 2700 if the housing is not cracked.

anybody had this happen to them. what was problem and cost to repair.

thanks for any help

Is it a '97 or a 24v? The 24v didn't show up 'till mid '98.

Blown headgasket? There's an oil passageway toward the front of the block that is a common point of failure (as far as blown headgaskets go). You'll have a slight (or not so slight) oil weep where the head meets the block. Not so bad to fix.

Or maybe a cracked gear case? That's a bit tougher to fix. Lotsa stuff has to come out. Not sure what would cause that, either.

Or it could just be the front case cover gasket. There really isn't any pressure behind it, just oil slung from the gears. That would be an easy fix.

Any mods?
