Hey guys,

My dad just turned the power screw up on his 91 CTD and now he has oil comming out of the dipstick tube, I'm not sure this has anything to do with it or not. Anyone have any idea what to check?

His truck is a 91 auto 4. 10 gears reg. cab

Thanks for any replys

Dennis

Maybe a plugged up blow by tube...

... or maybe justy excessive blow by that can not fit out of the regular tube. What ever the reason, it sounds like internal engine pressure that is normalizing to the atmosphere through the dip stick.

The blow by tube appears to be clear.

With engine shut down We blew real low air presure (2lbs) into the dipstick tube and the air came out the blow by tube. So I'm baffled.

Dennis

BTW the oil is running down the side of the engine and dripping off the oil pan so there is a quite of bit of oil blowing out of the tube

Ummmm, oh boy.......

Dbonzi, I hope I wayyyy out here but... .

Let me tell you about my younger brothers Toyota... . I know its not the same but what happened is...

I swear it's the god's honest truth.

Going up a long grade, camper, utility trailer loaded to the rails...

He's turning 4000 RPM in 3rd.

Next thing we know we see little tiny blackish spots on the windshield. We pull over and open the hood.

Funny thing is the dipstick is hangin out of the tube, just barely a couple inches left in the tube, oil everywere.

We check the breather, its ok, check the oil, add a quart and I tell him to go and 'light it up' lets see whats what.

He fired it up and gave the throttle a quick poke... ... well, I damn near lost my beak!! :--) :--)

The dipstick came out from the tube at about 200MPH and went a full 40 feet up the highway before hitting the ground and sliding to stop.

The moral of the story was, broken compression rings in 2 cylinders were letting cylinder pressures into the crankcase and pressurizing it big time.

If your breather is clear then I'd be concerned. Lord I hope I'm wrong on this one.

2 psi of air is not enough to force oil up the tube ahead of just seeping out the overflow. It will go that way first, before moving the oil all the way up that tube. If your ran 100 PSI you might see a different result. Remember, the breather is darn near a 1 inch dia. tube

You may have a problem elsewere, mmmm... crack in block/oil passage area, hole/crack in a piston head, or what else I'm not sure.

Was there any funny noises/sounds leading up to this?

Any other observations prior to and when it happened???

I think the only way to get oil out of the dipstick tube is to pressurize the crank-case.

Do a quick test, plug the breather and start the truck. No high revs. just 750-1000 RPM's. Watch the dipstick tube for spouting.

If it spouts, you got problems. Any ugly sounds, roughness idling??

Geez, I hope I got this all wrong and I'm just blowin wind :( :(

BTW, I do not think the 'adjustment' to fueling is the cause, unless you went wild and broke/collapsed a ring in the process.

Please let us know how it goes. Good luck

Bob.

how many miles on the truck??

my brothers truck does about the same thing and we are thinking that the rings are toast. his has 210,000 miles. and we are sure the mant. on the thing was a bit shy of good. :(

I blew my motor last Oct. It ran rough, EGTs were high, oil out the tube. I'd do a compression test to see. It was the 6th cylinder for me.
