am I just that stupid or do you need to torque drain plug to the danger zone . I changed oil yesterday cleaned pan as usual an got drips from plug,so tried a little tighter no luck. So off to parts store foe new plug installed as normal and still drips have tightened to the point of stripping pan and still drips any ideas??

I don't remember on the 97 but doesn't it have a washer that goes between the plug and pan. Try some of that gasket in a tube,etc around it before you put it in.
 
Wally, Take a good look at your oil pan. Is it still flat at the sealing area?The pan can become concaved there if the plug had been over-torqued in the past. I have found that the Fukimoto (sp?) drain valve sealing surface is enough larger that it will usually correct for this situation. Bob
 
Wally, I just went through this same ordeal. I tried different plugs, sanding the area around the plug and couldn't get it to quit leaking. This is apparently a common problem if you over tighten the plug. The only remedy is to replace your oil pan. I'm having that done next week and thank goodness it will be covered by the 100K warranty. Otherwise, you're looking at a $700 bill.
