Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil Pan Gasket Replace

Hi Guys, Came for some more info from the TDR answer place.
Thanks ahead of time you guys are always great with my Problems.

Just need to know the best way to change my'99 Quad 2WD oil pan.
Anybody done this ?
Is there enough clearance without jacking the motor or should I get a
crane in to do the job?
Buddy's got a real heavy crane or will a normal one do it?

I have only done this on 2nd Gen 4WD trucks. Not sure on a 2WD. The 4WD version requires the shop crane and lifting the front of the engine until the rear valve covers almost touch the firewall overhang. You have to drop the pan onto the cross member, then reach inside to remove the bolts from the sump and drop it into the oil pan. After doing that there is just room enough to work the pan out by pulling it out towards the transmission.
I assume that the 2WD version would be similar. Someone else will confirm or deny for sure.

You want a fairly stout shop crane for sure. No cheap imports as you don't want a failure with your hands in close proximity to the action.

You nailed it Mike.If you have the luxury of a lift use a bridge between the fenders so you can work underneath standing up.I had the pleasure of doing a 15 with that huge crossmember a bit ago-tons of fun

Hey thanks for reply , do I need to drain anti freeze or disconnect anything ?
Hoses, ground straps , any oil lines , anything going to hit I should watch?

Yes I am pretty sure it's the same routine for 2wds. I read you support the engine then remove the side engine mount bolts and raise the engine. Could it be raised from underneath with a jack and blocked up with lumber?

Don't see any reason to drain the radiator, radiator hoses should be OK, but watch them along with the intercooler piping while lifting. You will probably have to remove the fan shroud, and disconnect the downpipe.

You say you need to replace the oil pan gasket, I assume you have tightened all the pan bolts (they can work pretty loose)? Also, if it appears to be leaking on the driver side mostl likely it is not the oil pan gasket, but rather the tappet cover. Due to the age these trucks nowadays the tappet cover gasket can be completely deteriorated and leaking badly by 200,000 miles, mine was. It appeared to be leaking from the rear of the oil pan but replacing the tappet cover gasket cleared up the leak.
