I did it on my '98 12v but being so long ago I can't remember if I had the trans out or not at the time, jacked the engine up a bit to gain some clearance, but I think I had the trans in, well maybe. :confused:

Can the pan come out with the trans and adapter removed and by just jacking the front of the engine up on the damper to tilt it back for crossmember clearance? It looked llike it had enough clearance when I pulled the trans out and tilted the engine back..... anyone have experience doing it that method? Just want to remove pan bolts n oil pick up bolts n slide it back off the engine..... also want to avoid jacking the engine up since I have no room where truck is parked to move engine hoist in:{

Thanks guys,

Joe

You have to pick it up enough to get your hands in there to unbolt the sump after taking the bolts out of the pan.

It is gonna' be a little awkward without a transmission back there to steady things when you hoist it by the lifting eyes, a lot of little stuff may need to be unhooked.

In my opinion there is no safe way to change that pan without hoisting it, especially with the transmission off.

I took one off an 03. Fan shroud loose, motor mounts loose, jack front of engine up until the valve cover is tight against the cowl. (~4" at the moror mounts) Had to lift the frame slightly to allow the front axle to droop some too. If your truck is lifted you may not have to do this.

Just wanted to throw an update in here for others who may do the pan removal in the future. Sure did need to raise the engine a good ways in order to get the pan out. Hooked the cherry picker up to the factory hoist points and got the engine up about 6" and it was plenty of clearance to get hands inside to remove pick-up tube. Had the exhaust removed and the intake tube as i am doing injectors at the same time so lots of stuff had been removed as is. Fan shroud moved up and down with engine since those brackets are attached to front of engine. Wasn't too bad of a job but also having the transmission out helped a bunch as well. Still a major PITA! :-laf
