A while back Evan Beck informed a second generation owner that the engine oil pan could be removed from underneath if the transmission, flywheel, and engine rear adapter plate were removed.

Does anyone know if this procedure will work on a first generation? I will be pulling the transmission on my 1992 soon to repair a leaking front seal and if possible I want to install a set of rod and main bearings at the same time. The truck just turned 214,000 miles and the engine is in good shape and a new set of bearings should insure bottom end good health for a long time.

While the pan is off I plan to weld in bungs for a bypass filter return, oil temperature gauge, and a pickup for a preluber I am putting together.

TIA!!!

Pan Removal

While it should be possible to get the pan off with the motor in place, this would be practical only for changing the gasket or welding in you bungs. Think about it, to do a proper job of the main and rod bearings the crank has to be removed and checked for wear. Also the rod and main bearings should be pre assembled and checked for the proper clearance. What about the rings, most engines wear them faster than the bearings. Probably the timing cover would have to be removed to get the crank out. Would probably be best to remove the engine, since you will have the transmission out any how, this would not be much additional work and allow you to do a first class job on the engine.
