I need to replace the oil pan on my 92 4X4. Looks like I'm going to either have to lift the engine or drop the front axle to get enough room to change it.

Anyone done this before? Any pointers or info on "gotchas" would be welcome!!

Dropped the pan on the 91. 5, a few years back. Thats a story in itself:-laf. However, the drive train was dissasembled and only had to hoist the engine. With the drivetrain intact, it is a very tight and laborsome task. Removing the axle will not help. The crossmember under the motor is the issue. If you can drop the t-case/transmission down and hoist the engine up, you may get clearance. I did not have the ability to do it this way. Watch out for the wiring harness at the back of the engine. The cowling at the firewall hump opening can be sharp. GregH

PS. You may also have to remove the sump tube to remove the pan. You'll need a new gasket for the sump tube, as well as the pan.

Ohhh, those scars are ugly!! Lots of black tape to mark the spot!! HA!!

Really, though, you'll have take the transmission loose. The engine won't go high enough for the pan to clear the crossmember and pick up tube with the transmission or adapter plate attached..... if it's an auto, you might could pull it forward some with the radiator out, and it might have enough clearance, but with a standard transmission, none of the ones I've tried will do it. The top of the transmission hits the floorboard really quick. It's the same way in my '92 Ford..... and I beat that firewall in with a slightly large hammer... .

Thanks..

Thank you all for all your feedback. You basically told me what I wanted to know - if it was possible without dismantling major portions of the truck and/or drivetrain.

I am now deciding what I am going to do with the truck. I'd love to keep the truck but right now I just don't have the time and money required to keep up with the repairs at the moment, so I'm considering selling it.
