How high is the oil pressure supposed to be at idle? Mine is at the low part of the normal range until i start to get the rpm up. My 97 seem to have higher pressure at idle. I have a HO cummins

You need a mechanical gauge to find out for sure. All your factory gauge knows is the engine has more than 6 PSI when running. When I checked mine, it had about 40 at idle and 70 at 3000 RPM.

Your factory gauge uses an algorithm to give you the gauge reading you would expect. Low at idle, and higher at speed.

Service manual states (page 9-338):

Engine Oil Pressure (MIN)

At Idle: 68. 9 kPa (10 psi)

At 2500 RPM: 206. 9 kPa (30 psi)

sag2 is right... check it with a manual gauge.

When my engine is warm, at idle the needle is at the low part of the normal range, then once I'm at 1500 rpm its in the middle of the normal range. Drop back to idle and the needle drops. My '01 didn't do this at all. When cold, the needle is pegged at the top of normal range.

Oil Pressure Gauges

Has anyone installed a real gauge for oil pressure? The more I look at mine, the more irked I get at DC. I don't want an idiot light, I want a real gauge. If I wanted idiot lights, I wouldn't have gotten a diesel.

Idiot theres that word again. Jean you best be careful with that word. Before long you will have Whitmore on here:D You already got one idiot(me:eek: )that responded.
