I have a problem with the oil pressure readings on my 2000 3500 (auto). The other day I found a mouse nest inside the air intake and removed it. Today I fired it up to drive into town and pressure read normal. 5 miles down the road it read "0". I shut the truck off and the gauge went up all the way to max. The engine doesn't sound like it's running with no pressure but zero readings concern me. My question is, where is the oil pressure sending unit located? I'm wondering if the mouse could have chewed the wire (?) or do I have a real problem here? Is there anything else I need to check? Thank you and I really appreciate any help on this matter! Jim

Location

J,

Oil pressure sending unit is located on engine block, D/S behind power steering pump. Should be a 2 wire black connector. Oil pressure sending units have been known to go bellyup. Not sure if it is a "dealer only" part.

Jim,

The oil press senders on our truck are know to die. You can get a new one at a Cummins shop for much less than you would at a dodge dealer. If you do a search for oil press sender you will find lots of info. Look for a post by me that has the part number you need.

FOR your own peace of mind, you can hook up a mechanical gauge (got mine at WalMart for ~$7) to the 1/8NPT fitting on top of the oil filter housing and run the line up through the back of the hood and hook it under a windshiled wiper. I wouldnt recommend this for a permanent set up, but for a quick run down the road, just to get an idea. My gauge reads anything from real low to high, but I have 30psi at hot idle; 65 at WOT, nearing the gov cutoff.
