I´m in mexico and having an oil pressure problem. 1996 2500 4x4 5 Speed. After driving 1 - 2 hours in 5th gear 1750RPM Oil Pressure will drop to Zero, letting off to lower RPM,s to idle or coast will bring oil pressure back up. I can drive 1500 RPM (50 MPH) and pressure will hold. I can drive at 2250 RPM ) 75 MPH or higher and pressure will hold. Stop truck 15 minutes or longer and I´m good for 1-2-hours. Engine Temp is holding steady at 170 degrees. Any ideas? Thanks, Darwin Flaugh

Your oil pressure sending unit has taken a dump on you. Its very easy to replace. It is located behind the power steering pump.

Good luck

My oil pressure did similiar things last year. If the pressure changes rather quickly on the gauge, it definitely is your oil sending unit going bad. Mine would go from zero to 60, back and forth irratically. The clue is that the real oil pressure can't change rapidly, so the electronics with the sending unit are going bad. By the way, non-Cummins sending units are notorious for bad reliability. Good Luck!!

make sure you change the oil pressure sending unit fast before it starts puking oil all over everything. mine went bad the day after christmas flying down the highway about 70-75 and a 0 oil pressure reading. easy to replace once you have the right socket

Oil sensor part in Mexico

Anyone out there know if cummins in Mexico would carry the oil pressure sensor? Thanks,

What is the right socket mine still works but i believe it is the culpprit for for all the oil i have spewing on the tailgate and rear fenders, are they known for leaking?

When my sending unit died, I bought a KD tool made just for the sending unit. It takes a deeper socket than standard. The socket is tool #, K-D 3458. If you can't find a sending unit down there, just screw in a 1/8" pipe plug into the block after removing the sending unit, then fix it when you get the parts.

Don't run it too long with it bad, mine puked over a gallon of oil out when the internal part of the unit failed.

ok i see, now what would be the easiest way to get to the sensor it seems to be wedged between the motormount and and something else i cant quite remember of the top of my head. thanks

Some things on the engine are just not easy (fuel return lines for example) to get to. I had the most trouble just getting the clip on the plug in wire to come loose. Keep at it, there is room down there for the socket and to turn it. Good luck.

Thanks to you who´ve helped with this sensor problem in Mexico. We´re convinced that is the problem. We`ve found 3 dealerships, International, Kenworth and Mercedes Benz. Don´t have the part in hand yet but we will. They may have to order it. Thanks Again, Darwin
