On my way home tonite while shifting gears on the freeway I noticed the oil pressure idiot light would flash momentarily. Once off the freeway I figured out the oil pressure would drop to zero unless I maintained an idle of at least 1200rpms. I maintained at least 1400rpms for a couple of stop lights. At one of the stops the rpms dipped to 1000rpms. The oil pressure was ok. The 7 or 8 stops until I got home everything was normal. What Gives? Is it the oil pump? Not sure where to start for troubleshooting. Truck has a custom grinded plate. When slid forward it's good for 700 lb ft at the rear wheels. Last week I slid the plate back for some upcoming towing in the mountains. I should be at about 600 lb ft. 3000 GSK installed about 2 months ago. Oil change was done same time as the GSK. Mileage has been minimal because of ride sharing. Only use Fleetguard filters and Delo.

I'm thinking the oil pump might be bad. Does that sound right? What else should I investigate? How hard to replace the oil pump?

Your Oil Pressure sender is going bad. You can get one for your 96 at NAPA about $30. The Oil Pump on the Cummins hardly ever goes bad and when they do they make a lot of noise.
