Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) oil pressure?

I have an '01 with a faulty oil pressure gauge, or something. Whenever I turn the key on the pressure gauge on the dash climbs up and stays there. (Without the motor running. ) It stays in one spot regardless of driving conditions, temp, etc. I thought it was the sender so I bought one off of e-bay that was supposed to work. Well, I plugged it in and nothing. I get the same reading as before. I don't want to spend the money to take it into the shop. Any ideas?

i know the 3rd gens use the gauge like a warning light (on or off). not sure about the late 2nd gens.

Same for 2002, I installed direct reading oil pressure gage,
after reading how the computer controlled the indicator.

I think max reading is open in gage wiring or sw ( computer does it )

Ditto on my 99. From what I've read, it sounds more like a firmware cover-up to avoid fixing a real problem. I've got a Westach gauge hooked up to the test port on mine.
