2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Oil Pressure Line Failure

I've noticed that when I have to stop suddenly and quickly, my oil pressure light comes on and the pressure gauge drops to zero. After stopping completely it recovers and acts normal.

This has happened three times over the past month.

After searching through the threads most seem to point to the oil pressure sending unit.

This sound right?

I know another guy who has a 2nd Gen 1500 and his does the same thing. A Dodge thing?

If I had thought that there would be any chance of misunderstanding, I would have expounded; didn't see the need. Sorry, did not means to offend you.

No offense taken or intended. I was making clear that he shouldn't need spend much more than $35 for the sensor. Last I knew, NAPA are very proud of their sensor at $300+. I don't know if all Cummins dealers use similar pricing or not. The two times I've bought the sensor from the local C. A. dealer in the past 10 years, the price has been about the same. (And I'm the only one ever to buy the sensor from them. )

Very typical symptom as to what you are seeing. I've been living with the same. Last week, I located the sender on the block, wriggled the connector, and now the dash gauge reads higher, and 40 psi at idle. I wonder if it was really just a poor connection or just wishful thinking ?

While there are many folks pointing at the sender, and most likely for experienced reasons, you should verify oil level. Low oil would pool to the front in hard braking, and the pickup could suck air, and that would make pressure fall off too.

I bought my sender at Car Quest. Unlike the original, it actually shows higher pressure when the oil is cold and lower pressure while at an idle with the oil at operating temp.

It's the pressure sensor.

And if the price you find is more than around $35, PM me. The local Cummins Atlantic sells them for around that price.

I'll check the Cummins Midsouth on Monday... Thanks for the tip. :)

I'll check the connection too. Hopefully that will be it for now.

Agree with that also, however, it would have to be really low for that to be an issue.

Did that. The level is fine and I've never noticed any leaks anywhere I park my truck.

Car Quest is another option if Cummins doesn't have one.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Does anyone have the oil pressure sending unit Cummins part number?

Midsouth is apparently full of people who can't look it up.

They need the engine serial number to find the proper cross reference. That said, STF. I've posted the part number for mine a time or two, and've posted references to those threads.

I am having the same problem with the oil pressure too. I had just pulled a good hill with the 5th wheel and pulled over to lot a truck go past. The oil pressure dropped to 0psi and the gage light came on. The pressure came back and lot the egts cool, shut down and check the oil, was good but still a little unsettling so started looking on here and found I am not alone.

Thanks

Glen

I too would replace your sender.
