Archived oil pressure

anybody, please help. coming home from work today with trailer, i got to my drive way and check guages like came on, oil presure is "zero". shut the truck down right there. turned key back on to the accessory position and guage moves from below zero to zero. seems the guage is working, but on oil pressure. i have a dual amsoil dual by-pass and have been using series 3000 5w30 for about 12000 miles new. what can i do tonight, have a big day scheduled for tuesday.

waited about 30 min and started truck. pressure went to 40 + and would not move. turned off and tried again in 15 min. now everything is normal.

think it is safe to drive, thinking it is the sending unit acting up. 59,000 miles on truck.

As part of the guage package I added an oil pressure gauge because the DC sending unit can fail and OP is not something you can guess about.

I found myself in a similar position about a month ago. I will give you odds that after having checked you've got enough oil and the pumpgear is still working, providing and circulating oil to the engine and other components under the hood, you will realise that it's most likely the sender unit which has given up the ghost..... if not the connector itself. The dashboard gauge cluster is very rarely the culprit, but it's a concern when it happens.



The sender is physically located on the driver's side of the block below and behind the fuel filter and a real b***ch to get at. Don't confuse it with IAT sensor, at roughly the same height but nearer to the firewall and much more accessible. (FYI Cummins Part No: #3408428)

You might want to try and ensure that the connector on the loom is snug on the sender unit as well. Cummins will sell you a new sender for a little over US$60.
