Hello, having a problem with one of my company trucks its a 96 2500 2x4 , automatic, 70,000mi. on it. While returning from a 200 mile trip. . I noticed what I thought was low oil pressure around 15 on the oil pressure gauge but if I eased it down from 70 to 65 the pressure would increase to 20. As I got closer to home and slowed down the pressure continued to rise, until I accelerated from 25m. p. h. to 45m. p. h. at this point it suddenly dropped to 0, I let all the way off the gas and it jumped back to 40 and every other time I accelerated to get back up to speed it would do this, for the last 3 miles I went really slow with 40 p. s. i on the gauge... ... ... ... It sounds like a bad oil pump? or if im lucky a really erratic gauge? any help would be appreciated.

Check the wire lead to the top of the sender. Could be a bad connection. Had a similar problem in the past. From the sounds of it though, its probably the sender.

I once had a gas engine that did the exact same thing. I thought for sure it was either the sender or the pump. As it turned out, there was a bunch of sludge in the pan. When RPMs would get up, the sludge would block the pickup and the pump would cavitate ... oil psi would go to 0, let off the throttle and like magic, I would have oil pressure again.

I hope this is not the case for you. :(

My 98 has had the sender replaced about a year and now it is turning the chime on at idle when hot, I had the old one I got from the dealer,so I took it apart and checked the ohms of resistance with air pressure it would go from 80 ohms to zero at the low end of the scale. the grease the used on the wiper had built up on the low side,I cleaned it and it works fine for now,the manual says 10 lbs oil pressure at idle minimum,

Hook up a manual gauge to the port above the oil filter and compare readings between the two, my money would be on a bad sending unit!

Try a new sending unit. Lilse makes a 1 & 1/16" socket for less than $15. The sending unit will be less than $50. The mopar # is ( I can't find it right off :( /Cummins 3923200. It is located on the d. side of the block above the filler cap for the ps fluid.

Its easier to access with the charge air tube removed from the intake manifold.

Never hurts to ck. the pressure manually either, just to be sure.

Good luck

Andy

Sending unit??

Hey guys, just got back from a 4K trip to the east coast, driving along at 75mph, oil pressure drops to zero, then jumps to normal, then the gauge wipers back and forth a few times before resuming normal reading. I panic stop and check the oil and engine... nothing! I resume driving and the problem continues to crop up now and then. Its a couple thousand miles later and I still get this every now and then. Sending unit... wiring??
