Had a buddy tell me to use lucas 5w-40 high tbn. He said the high tbn is made for flat tappet cams which are in our trucks and the tbn helps lubricate and protect the cam better than other oils. What is your input?

Lots & Lots

You'll find lots & lots of opinions on different oils here. Some people swear by Rotella, some swear by Dello, some swear by the different full synthetics like royal purple and amsoil and the like. I have a 99 with over 260k and I've never used anything but Rotella. Others have double what milage I do, and credit it to full synthetics. Our engines are built VERY VERY well. I believe as long as you keep a quality oil, be it plain old dino oil or the synthetics, keep good filters in place, your motor will run for a LONG LONG time.

TBN is an abbreviation for total base number. From Blackstone Labs:

The TBN measures the total basedity of an engine oil; that is, how much base (as in, a base vs. an acid) additive is in the oil to offset the deleterious effects of acids coming into the oil from combustion and other sources.

Flat tappet cams benefit from EP (extreme pressure) and anti-scuff/anti-wear additives. TBN has little to do with lubricity.

With ULSD high TBN (Total Base Number) is not required to be near as high as it once was. . With only 15PPM sulphur being the maximunm now the potential for acidity build up in the crankcase oil is not what it was when we had 500PPM and even higher long ago.

TBN has nothing to mdo with wear prevention, Only acid nuetralization. There is another number that is measured in new and used oil and it is TAN (Total Acid Number). If you believe that there is any benefit to reformulate your oil then I doubt that anyone will be able to change your mind. We all make our choices and pay our prices. I have run Delo for 85K in mine and it works for me.

227,XXX on rotella 15w40 and still going. CI-4 rated oil is the best for our trucks . In 07 they came out with CJ-4 and CI-4+ oil for the new diesels and their emission systems and also to meet EPA requirments IIRC. The CJ-4 and CI-4+ will work in our trucks fine but is not as good as the oil they replaced. I think as long as you use oil that is rated for diesel engines and practice good maintence you will not have a problem.

you can always buy a high zinc additive and add this to your oil when you change it. usually this is used on break in, cam etc. but you can run this. you wouldn't need alot.

anyone received multis of the same post from weaver. my e-mail has gone crazy with more than a dozen and they just keep coming. need to find answer its blocking all my e-mails.
