I have recently completed a bypass filter install. I have the oil return line setup with a special fitting through a modified oil cap. I am curious if this flow of oil is good for sample purposes? It's a simple matter to carefully loosen the oil cap and hold the sample bottle under the return oil stream. #ad

Yes, you can use this return line to take your oil sample. You will probably get slightly difference results than if you took the sample from the sump, but the key to oil analysis is to be consistent in how samples are obtained.

The things you are looking for (TBN, viscosity, etc) will be unaffected whether you take the sample before or after it passes through the by-pass filter. The levels of solid contaminents will perhaps be a bit lower, as all the larger solids will be removed by the filter.

You could use the oil cap return, but as mentioned, it would not be truly accurate, but i would think close enough. Otherwise, you can get one of those dipstick tube samplers from "CPFF"
