On steep down hill rides i need to know what it take to stop the Oil from coming out of the crankcase vent. I know there are a few options out there but which one is working the best.

Thanks for the info

Trey

TSB 09-002-02 might help you to get it fixed on D/C's dime. A complaint to a service writer about the many times it has happened to your truck might be the way to go.

will this TSB stop the oil from coming out or will it just reroute it farther back on the truck. Also is the dealer the one who needs to do it or will they let me do it. The truck still is under warranty so i don't think it will be a problem getting it.

has any one tried the Fleetguard Enviroguard, It seems like a good product. Is this thing supposed to keep the oil in the truck on extreme downhills.

Just reading the TSB... has anyone actually had the dealer:

"NOTE: IN THE INTEREST OF CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, RECORD SET RADIO STATIONS AND REPROGRAM WHEN PROCEDURE IS COMPLETED. " ;)

My read of the TSB suggests it includes a new valve cover that has a vent and plugs the original vent. Seems to me it will eliminate the engine oil overflow but not the crankcase breather. The breather is moved away from the front of the engine.

Breather Oil Overflow

Hey guys, Before spending many $$$ on something for the problem you are talking about, read page 234 of the "A" maintenance/owners manual. The third item down the list and to be done at every oil change is "drain the breather bottle". Now as I am the new owner of an 02, upgraded from an 89, D350 12 valve with open breather road pipe, is the bottle filling up between oil changes, or isn't it getting serviced by the person doing the oil change? The issue outlined by tpruitt is an issue known by D/C and is addressed by the linked TSB:

Owners of 1998 - 2002 (BR) Ram Trucks equipped with the 24-valve Cummins diesel engine may experience engine oil overflow from the front crankcase breather when the vehicle is operated off-road on an extreme downhill grade (37. 5% or 22° slope/grade).

Failure to service the catch bottle may result in some oil drips. Steep downhill runs result in significant oil loss through the crankcase breather system, even those without (1998. 5-1999) the bottle.

TSB 09-002-02 Will stop the oil that’s coming out on steep hills going down but not going up steep hills. Not as much oil will come out after this TSB has been done not even a 1/4 of the oil will come out than what you have now but it will not stop all oil from coming out. It does replace the bottle up front and redirects the oil coming out by the starter. I work at a DLR and performed this on a few trucks with great success. It is a pain in the butt to perform but to me on mine it was worth it.

I had this repair performed under warranty after having trouble on steep downgrades. The new breather hose end hangs just above the fron differential, giving it an oily film, but there is less oil dripping from that than there was from the original breather and oil bottle. Glad I had it done!

"WTF is the tappet cover?"

ON the drivers side of the block behind the injection pump and other "things" along that side for the block. Remember cam in is the block on the ISB not in the head under the valve cover.
