I heard of this happening, But not had it happen to me yet. I was on the ranch comming down a steep incline when i started smelling oil on the exhaust. yes maybe the oil canister might have been near full as i have'nt dumped it in a while. but i also lost a couple quarts of oil from the engine.

My question is, has anyone else done this and will warrenty repair the bypass and put it back were it used to be or is there some other problem with that local on these era trucks. ?????

I'm currently trying to get my dealer to fix this problem,They said they were going to get on the internet to see if there is any recalls on this.

Yes that is a known problem with the 2nd gens due to the placement of the blowby. There is a tsb for it. I forget which one but on about a 23% down angle the oil flows to the front of the engine and flows right out the blowby tube. The tsb relocates the blowby to the side of the engine (not extending the hose but the actual outlet from the block). Have heard of some getting it done for free while others have had to pay to get it done. I think I remember reading in the neighborhood of $900. 00 if you have to pay. I suspect a search on the topic would bring up some threads on it. On the 3rd gens they moved it to the side of the block instead of the front. Some have come up with much cheaper alternatives. I think member ERICBU12 had a thread with his fix with pictures and directions and was pretty cheap.

Jim,

I had the same problem a couple of years ago. The first time it happened I wasn't sure where the oil came from, or why it happened. The second time it happened, it was really steep and it blew out nearly a gallon of oil! Made a huge mess under the hood when the fan blew it all around.

Check out TSB 09-002-02 at this link: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/membersonly/tsb/01tsb.htm

You will have to scroll part way down the page to read this TSB.

When mine did it, I took it to the dealer (still under warranty) along with a copy of the TSB, and they took care of the problem and installed the kit, all covered by warranty. Of course, when I took it in, it was still dripping oil from just about every crevice you could think of. They charged me something like $30 to wash the engine compartment before they could work on it, as that part was not covered by the warranty.

For photos and details on how EricBu12 changed the vent location, see TDR Issue 44, page 52

I am currently trying to get my dealership to help fix this,my truck is still under warranty, but I'm not sure this problem is considered a warranty Item. Just this bullitin. My problem is i cant wheel my truck like it is, and feel comfortable that this problem will not reeacur. It could dammage the engine if you loose enough oil. If this is such a problem why dont they just repair the problem as a desighn flaw.

Good luck to me right!! getting dodge to do something about this.

I have one. It seems to work pretty well. I haven't had any oil spillage from steep declines. The only thing I don't like about it, is that the new oil cap they give you manages to leak a tiny bit of oil because it is a secondary vent.
