Here I am

Oil Temp.

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies

Thanks, TDR Staff

DC wants $218 PER ball joint for 2000 2500!!!

Do our trucks have self-adjusting rear brakes?

I have a spot for one more gage and I have an oil temp. gage.

Were should I put the prob to read oil temp. ?

Is there a plug on the 24 valve head I could put the prob in?

Or should I put the prob in the oil pan?

Any Help would make me :D

Thanks

Cliff

I have mine in the drain plug, out of convenience more than anything else; temps will vary some depending on where you put it. Mine runs between 180-195F.

Oasis 3

There is a port on top of the oil filter mount housing that is 1/8 npt. Right next to the line that goes to the turbo if I recall correctly

Just as an alternative thought, engine oil is pretty much gonna track with engine coolent temp - but if you plan much serious pulling, you might consider putting that guage in your transmission or differential for a more meaningful temperature monitoring... ;) :D

Thanks

I will look at the filter tomarow but I think my temp. prob is 1/2 inch. I will look in to it maybe I can put a fitting on it and make it fit. Gary good thinking I have a gage in for trans temp. just need to change trans oil to install it. this will happen soon.

Thanks for the input so far.

I would think that the oil temp would respond faster than the water temp gauge. Remember that the oil does a major part of the cooling in the engine, for a little demo just plug up one of the piston cooling nozzles and see how long that piston lives:)

William Cummins... .

I'll second what Gary said. I have an engine oil temp. gauge on my first gen. and the temp. runs between 185 and 190 deg. When the coolent temp goes up the oil temp follows along.

The rear diff would be a good location for the temp gauge.

Oil cools the block, water cools the head! If not pulling oil temps are borring. Most times oil temps run 20 - 30 degrees warmer then coolant (12V). In winter months with winter front I can get coolant to be 20 or more degrees warmer then oil.

Oil temp when measured at the filter head port should not exceed 220 degrees per Cummins. I have got to 215. Never warmer.

IMO, a transmission oil temp is even more unneeded then engine oil.

if you never pull anything then a trans temp gauge is uneeded. if you tow a lot then it would be a very good thing to have specially if you tow heavy.

Cliff,

Hey!, sorry I missed you at Muncie. I looked for you but we were nevr at the same place at the same time.

I have my oil temp gauge mounted atop the oil filter. Works great and is easily the least important gauge I have.

I may be wrong, but I believe that water absorbs and gives off heat more quickly than oil. This would mean that, all things being equal, the oil will be slower to warm up and slower to cool off.
