Is anybody with a 24 valve truck running an engine oil temp. gage? If so, what brand of gage and were are you locating the sender? Does anyone know if there is a convenient plugged hole in the block somewhere (what thread size)? I have just modified a new, stock oil pan drain plug to accept the 1/8-27 NPT sender which Auto Meter uses. It works, but I need to improve on it and make a second version. Just wondering if maybe there is a better place to install it.

I think the most widely used location is the top of the engine oil filter housing. My truck is a 97 12 valve, but I think the oil filter housing is the same. It has a 1'8" pipe plug in it, Just remove, & put a short sending unit in the hole! Easy to get to, and you should see temps around 185-190 deg... DDG

Dennis,

I was thinking about that location, but when I looked in my service manual, I thought it said that the oil pressure relief valve/bypass was under there.

Dennis has the right spot. I asked Cummins about this and they said this is the best location on the engine to moniter oil temps. They recomended to not exceed 220 degrees if possible. I have seen 215 when pulling hard in the wind but then engine coolant is getting up their also. I also run 5w30 (Amsoil). Most empty temps are in the 180 - 190 range. Although, in the winter months I have seen temps below 175 after 100 miles of interstate speeds with a winter front on! Oil generally runs 20 degrees warmer than coolant. At least on mine!
