The oil in my previous 95 Dodge/Cummins, with a 12 valve engine didn't turn black right away.
At 160 HP and a combustion even that was designed for as complete of a burn as possible there was minimal amounts of particulates left to saturate the oil. Turn it up to th 350 HP range and the oil will blacker a lot faster.
The internal EGR is done by a patented engine design exclusive with Cummins called "deep spray technology" which began with the 2004 EPA regulations requiring less NOX in the exhaust stream.
The EGR was an effect of mechanical design. The deep spray technology was developed to address emissions and power. More complementary systems than dependent systems.
The in-cyinder EGR effect can be completely eliminated by changing hard parts. Revamping the programming is a lot harder to do and is the major source of the soot. That is demonstrated with the 6. 7's. Remove the external EGR while tuning if for efficiency and the oil will stay cleaner longer. Nothing like a 12V but a lot closer to the early CR lower HP engines.
