I would like some advise on engine oil weights. I have 10,000 miles on my '04 now and would like to switch to Amsoil synthetic. Their diesel oils are either 15W-40, or 5W-30. I'm going to need the 5 weight for winters in Chicago, but I'm not sure whether 30 weight will be OK? What synthetic oils and weights have others used?

I've been using the series 3000 5W30 for 3 years now in my CTD, with 190,000 miles on it, it works great.

Oil analyst does not indicate any wear issues.

Been using the Series 2000 0w30 in my car for over 10 years, and only change it once a year, with 335,000 miles on it, it too works fine. ;)

You won't go wrong with either product, but the 5W30 is the more advanced product.

Good luck

Rick

My best experience has been with Mobile Delvac 1, a 5W-40 full synthetic. This is the especially Diesel engine application oil, certified for EGR apps. Which we don't have thank goodness. I use it on all my family diesel's. :p

The Amsoil series 3000 5W-30 can be used year around, and is deffinately a HDD engine oil!

Thank you for all the responses. Amsoilman, the 5W-30 is OK for towing in the summer too? I used that weight in my gas engines all the time, but this is my first diesel for a daily driver.

Yes, the HDD Series 3000 5W-30 is TRULY a Heavy Duty Diesel Oil! I have seen it being used in the 18 wheelers doing cross country work, and it has done a very good job in these applications, so I'm sure it would do just as good in your application. I used it in my own 94' CTD, and it was just fine, but in my part of the country, I am now using the HDD & Marine 15W-40 in my 03'. :)

If you want to go the synthetic route. I would recommend you use 5W40 Synthetic year round.

This will give you the startup properties and the high temperature load carring ability.

You then do not have to change viscosity for winter and summer.

My son started using the 5W30 in his 99 a little after 10000 rolled over. He has about 150000 on it now. He switched to the 15W40 last oil change only cause the 5W30 is a little cheaper. It don't get that cold in our part of Texas but it do get hot. I have used the 5W30 in the trucks before this one but I'm using the 15W40 in it now for the same reason. All Amsoil. I run the 5W30 in my 2001 NB TDI.
