Quick question . Is there a breather on top of a Getrag? There is trans oil running down the sides and all over the trans. The truck is new to me and I think the last owner may have overfilled the trans. or is there something going on here that I don't know about? Thanks.

Are you sure it's trans fluid? Mine has been oily since new, but it is blow by from the engine. There is a tube hanging down under the truck which is a crankcase breather. Look and see if it is the same oil. My truck is so oily underneath it will never rust. A common problem w/older cummins 5. 9 they lost oil.

Thanks Big Don, Well I'm pretty sure it's from the top of the trans. There's no oil on the clutch housing and there's some right above the u-joint where it ran back and got thrown out by it spining. There's a few oily spots around the undercarrage where it shouldn't be oily, but not a lot(yet). I do see some oil around the blowby though but it doesn't seem excessive and I never see any oil spots on the drive.

Mine bleeds out of the breather on the top of the casing and makes a nice slick. (There was a crack in the shift lever boot that needed a little super-glue! #ad
) You can just see the breather if you remove the cab boots and look up under the transmission hump with a flash light. From this you should be able to see if its coming from there.
Happy Truckin'

I've been putting up with the same problem for over two years! It is the gasket between the trans case an the uppeer shifter plate. The only way to fix it is to pull the trans out and reseal it! My choice was to wait until the NV4500 became available for an after market replacement. NOW they came out with the six speed NV5600 so I figure why not wait a few months more? My main bearings are also making noise so it is very emportant to keep the fluid up to the full mark. (oil fill hole) I hope it will last a little longer! There IS a breather. I have also extended that up to the top of the fire wall but that was not it. You can check it by taking the shifter boot off on the inside and looking.

Thanks Luke. That sounds like what is going on. I'm going to have to put in a new clutch soon so I'll wait till then to fix it. My getrag is doin just fine so I guess I'll keep her. Have a Merry Christmas.

I read Lil' Dog's quick fix yesterday with a little laugh. I thought I would just replace mine when I found a small crack in mine. Then I called the local Dodge dealer, three to be exact, then I found out that the joke was on me. All three dealers wanted between $70-$80!!!! I decided on a little super glue myself!
While I was looking around on my Getrag, I noticed a lot of up and down movement in the driveshaft right behind the transmission. I took the driveshaft loose and was able to tighten the nut on the end of the tailshaft at least one turn. Now there's no up and down movement. Just tought I'd pass the info on.

Thanks Chris, I was wondering, What does the nut on the tailshaft of the trans. adjust? It is amasing what just a little looking here and there can find, and what kind of problems you can prevent.

Regarding the nut on the transmission tailshaft. Aside from the obvious of holding the tailshaft in place it also functions as a jamb nut to hold the speedometer drive gear from moving. If you've had erratic speed-o and or cruise control operation this may be why.

Like Bob said about the nut, and I think it might of fixed my speedo/cruse control problem. Local roads with some other cars on them provide only modest velocities, but I saw no fluctuations whatsoever on the speedo. I will confirm the results with a highway test soon, until then I hope you all have as much fun driving your trucks as I do mine!

I am greatful, very greatful. The tightening of the nut on my transmission solved my speedometer woes. I ran on the highway today and the speedo was steady as a rock. The cruise control also works perfectly. I also am changing the oil in it today and will replace it with Amsoil.
Thank you members for your responses to my speedometer woes, without you I wouldn't have gotten away with the cheap fix that I was looking for. Other than the time that I spent washing the transmission off and scratching my head I found out the solution that didn't cost any big bucks $$$.
Thanks again.
