I've been had by the KDP and am getting ready to remove the timing gear case. I know the injector pump is secured to it so what do I have to do to maintain my timing after I remove the pump and cam gear? I have never been involved with timing adjustments on one of these and I have no idea what is adjusted. If it is a twist the pump program like some I have done I can see myself having an issue. Also, will the injector pump gear remain attached and pull through the back of the case or is there some sort of orienting coupler between the pump and the gear? Surely it isn't necessary to remove the timing cover and the gear to get the injector pump off. Thanks for any help you can offer before I get myself into a heap of trouble.

P. S. Working on a 98 12 valve.

You need to go to #1 firing TDC. There are usually paint marks on the crank and cam gear. Remove the pump shaft nut and washer, spray clean the area and make a careful paint mark across the gear and shaft so you can get them back together. If you do a good, careful job, the timing will be close. You need to have the engine at TDC to pull the camshaft, for alighment and for connecting rod clearance.

I just got my hands on a service maual that answered a lot of my questions. I'm still a little worried about the timing but I guess I'll try to check it when I'm putting things back together. Even with the service manual I'm a little shaky on that.
