Ive been looking for tags or stamps on my rear axle and can't find out if it is a 70 or an 80 rear end. A friend on TDR says it's an 80 because of the rear disc brakes. I thought it was a 70 because it's a 2500 and 3500's come with an 80.

see sig for details

thanx

10" ring gear versus an 11" ring gear. For comparison - Chevy 14 bolt floating axle 2500 truck is an 10. 5", a Chevy non-floating axle 14 bolt is a 9. 5", and I think the ford 250 floating axle trucks might be a 9. 875" ring gear. I hear that the Duramax trucks get an 11. 5" ring gear. I suppose that bigger is better, but I dont know if it would make a difference. All newer 2500 M/T trucks have Dana 80's with Dana 70 axle tubes and brakes and I'm pretty sure they'd bolt right into where your Dana 70 resides.

Also - My truck has a sticker under the hood on the back side of the hood that specifies the drive train. Mine says Dana 80 hybrid in the rear. Dana 60 front axle, NV4500HD, and I dont remember the transfercase numbers...

Look on the center section, front left of axle

I have heard that all of the 3500 Rams have the

Dana 80, and all Cummins powered 2500's with a

manual transmission have a Dana 80. The automatic 2500s

have a Dana 70. I don't know the difference

between the 70 and 80 but Fritz' Ram Page should

enlighten anyone. . I forgot the link!

Mine is a 2001. 5 disc-brakes all around, 5 speed

manual. It even says Dana 80 on the sticker in

the glove box. The front axle is a Dana 60.

Also mine has a big 80 cast into the center

section of the rear axle. Look for it on the

rear axle, driver's side, front of the rear

alxe.

Auto equipped 2500s have the Dana 70.

I know one thing, I've seen MANY more Dana 80s being rebuilt at two different Dodge dealers than Dana 70s. Bigger isn't always better.

That's not true Chris. All 4x4 2500s and 3500s have the Dana 60 up front.

Good info. Mr Brewski (2500 Dana 80 is a hybrid... Dana 80 differential, Dana 70 peripherals).

If you want to know where the 80 turns into a 70? Look at the axle shaft next to the brake. You will see the housing neck down between the brakes and the springs. This where the axle shaft also necks down.
