Car Haulling Help.

Heavy Towing

I just spoke with an ex-trucker and he stated I would only need a CDL if my combined over the road weight exceeded 26,000 lbs.

I have always been under the impression that if your GCVWR exceeded 26,000 # you were required to carry a CDL. So which is correct? The truck I am looking to purchase is a 96 3500 and should have a GVWR of 8,500# and the trailer has a GVWR of 20,000# Am I CDL warranted? To license this setup for commercial use based in Colorado do I pay extra taxes like FET?

I was told at a weight station that if the truck gross vehicle by itself was over 10000 lbs I had to have a CDL. With the CDL I would have to log my miles and keep copies of my fitness report. In Alaska you have to be a permit(Over Size) if you haul a boat over 8ft wide. I put the required signs on and drove pass a weight station with out stopping. One of the cops caught me and made me go back to the weight station. They did not fine me but they gave me a lecture about stopping when hauling an oversize load. One officer said I was commercial because I had magnetic signs on my truck which advertised my charter business. They checked my load. Truck weighed 8,900 trailer 20600. I took my signs off the truck and they said I was good to go.

The CDL question has been "hashed" over numerous times. I just did a search typing in CDL and a goodly amount of info is still there. This is a very confusing subject and with individual states, some conflict, but most follow the DOT rules and regs.

jrandol, If your going commercial, you need the CDL. You guys can follow this link to read the DOT regs and if you scroll down, it lists state sites. Some state sites have good relative info, some don't. http://www.fmcsa. dot.gov/links.htm

So based on that information I do need a CDL for commercial use at this weight. Next question, do I need an ICC Authority #?
