I have a rear pinion seal that has just started to leak on my truck. I've got about 55,000 miles on it now and the seal used to weep a little but I can see it running now. My question is how difficult is it to replace and what is the torque speck on the nut holding the yoke. (it's a dana 80)

Also I noticed today that my power stiering pump is leeking too. Is there an oring kit that you can buy or do you have to replace the pump with a new one.

Hope someone can help.

Maybe this will get me to go buy a service manual.

Thanks

I'd look in my own service manual except the book doesn't list the axles by model number, they go by weight rating I think.

Anyway, for your rear pinion seal, keep in mind the yoke nut also preloads the pinion bearings, and can get very expensive if over torqued. On every pinion seal I've had to replace first I would get a feel for the preload on the bearings.

Jack the truck up and pull the tires and brake drums, so there's no drag. Some factory manuals tell you to put an inch/pound torque wrench on the pinion nut and record the effort required to rotate the pinion. This is the what you'll be aiming for upon reassembly. If you can't find an inch/pound torque wrench just get a good feel for the rotating effort, and go from there.

I've never used the torque wrench method, and have had no problems so far.

I had the first one replaced under warranty at 30,000 and having my second one done today at 55,000. I checked the procedure in the service manual and went to talk to my transmission man. He gave me such a good price, it is not worth my time to do it. Member John Berger had a lengthy thread on this some time back. After several replacements, I believe he went to a different seal than what DC uses and solved his problem. I told my transmission man this and he picked up three different seals and said he will use the one that appears to make the best seal. Hope it works this time.
