OK, I've replaced the seal on my transfer case 6 times. This is the seal where the rear driveshaft enters the transfer case. I've had 3 different shops look at it including DC. All the dealer want to do is replace the seal. All I want to do is get it fixed! It has 24,000 miles on it and is still leaking. #@$%!

A friend of mine mentioned there is an updated seal for the transfer case. Anyone heard or know anything about this. Part #'s would be helpful.

Thanx

Kevin, I would start suspecting a flaw with the output shaft at this point. Come on, 6 seals! There has to be something other than the seals at fault here (unless it is the same inept seal installer at the same dealer if that happens to be the case). Maybe the shaft is slightly out-of-round, off-center or possibly a rough spot that is wearing out the seals quickly. I would start demanding they get to the bottom of it and at least replace the output shaft to see if that cures the problem. Obviously seal replacement is not getting at the root of the problem.

Good luck

Vaughn

I agree with Vaughn that there is more to it than the seal. Take it to the stealer and tell them you want it fixed and not just a new seal.

I just repaired a leak on my front output shaft. A new seal didn't fix the leak, but a speedy-sleeve on the yoke did the trick.

Been there...

I went through this also. After 9 trips to Dodge, a couple seals, and new driveshaft, I ended up going to arbitration. I told them that after 9 tries, I wanted a new transfer case but they didn't see it that way. Their next idea was to modify the seal spring just for my truck. Anyhow, the arbitration was downright ugly... still gets my blood pumping. In the end I got a new transfer case but there was no excuse for what I had to go through to get a warranty item fixed. Their attitude was basically that they were doing me a favor by fixing a warranty item and if they needed to take 100 tries to do it, that was fair.

Never found out what the real problem was but I heard NV had some casting issues with the housings. A very small leak may have simply appeared to come from the rear seal.

Another item to check is the vent line. Mine would leak for a certain time after driving and a plugged vent line would have caused this. The case heats up, pressure builds, and it has to escape out the seal if the vent is plugged. The tech manual even mentions checking it but Dodge never did. Anyhow, good luck.

Sorry to hear you're having a problem Kevin!

I agree with Vaughn--maybe the output shaft. Also, if the driveshaft is out of balance, it will wear a seal out quickly.

jsnyder: Please explain speedy sleeve. What is it and where do you get them? I have a 12 valve, but the transfer case front output seal is leaking a little bit, and I plan on replacing the seal. I know there is actually an inner spring seal besides a rubber companion flange seal according to the manual. Please enlighten me on the speedy sleeve in case I end up needing that. Thanks.

My 99 was leaking also. Replaced the seal, Still leaked. Removed the tail shaft and replaced the bearing. Fixed the leak!!The dealer wants to sell ya the whole tail shaft for $300. 00!!! Got the bearing for the tail shaft from transmission shop. Race was worn slightly egg shaped. Just enough for a trickle of oil. The bearing should be much wider, especially on the Quad cabs. There's room for it. just a way to make it cheaper I guess:D

Do you have the "heavy duty" transfer case? If so,there is a small rubber plug on the very top of the tail shaft housing. That's probably where your leak is really coming from however it will look like the seal is still leaking due to the fluid running down to it. There is a revised plug you can get from the stealer.

Jstordahl,

A speedy sleeve is a very thin sleeve that you press onto the yoke to help cover/eliminate any wear spots on the yoke. I don't remember the part number, but I got it at NAPA. There is a specific one for the 241HD, they'll find it in the catalog with the seal.

You hammer it on, replace the seal, and bolt it back on!Oo.

mine has been leaking from day one and i have a new transfer case that was replaced a little over a year ago .

did that speedy sleeve come with its own seal ? i know when i put one of those on a harmonic balancer and used the original type seal it ate the seal withing minutes of being started , the sleeve had a seal that had a slightly larger id to compensate for the sleeve slightly larger od .

i'll check that plug tomorrow , thanks for the tip , also blow air thru my vent hose ...

Just wanted to post an update on my seal dilema. The problem is now solved. Oo.

Went to the Dodge dealer and told them my problem and they stated that there is a new new new updated seal. They stated they had replaced alot of them recently but this new seal does the trick. Purchased it, (for $31  ) and looked at it (looked totally different), then installed it at Torque This's shop this past Saturday as well as drain the Transfer case fluid. No leaks... Im a happy man. :)

I think what had been happening is that all the DC vendors had to get rid of thier old stock of the updated seal (you know the one that doesn"t work  and had been passing it off as the new seal. I should have known that if it looks the same it probably is.

Well, so know one makes the same mistake, the new part number is 5086054AA. This is for the output shaft seal.

Thanks for all your input.

I went through the same thing. a few seals, the dealer having the nerve telling me it's the ATF fluid fault - they told me not to fill the TC to capacity and the ATF expands too much causing the leak. . what BS. . anything to not have to spin their wheels.

They finally put in a whole new driveshaft. Lasted two year , not a leak. 6 months ago it started a very minor leak. brought it back again, warranty just about to run out of time. . they replaced the seal. . we'll see.

But I guess the next time it leaks I'll be doing the bearing and seal and having the driveshaft rebalanced.
