Emissions Testing to start country wide??

Overheating 7.3L Ford F-350

in school this week for our tear down (sorry I am supposed to say DIS ASSEMBLE) yes a '94 5. 9B series... I rolled laughing when I drew it out of the hat, that the 11 of us chose from. I traded it to another guy simply becuase I kind of felt it unfair to get an engine that I have basically "DISASSEMBLED" in my drive way more than once. I paid for this class so I wanted to learn something different. So now I am stuck with a '78 Cat. 3208 V8. NON TURBO... but nontheless it should be fun working with something else for a little while.

Just wanted to share this little tid bit.

The 3208 has puny c-rods in it too like the "other" diesel pickups have. :(

I used to run an old Massey 1805 tractor that had one of those motors. Did surprisingly well. Still no Cummins though.

The 3208 is a POS, at least in an on-highway application. It's a 10. 4L V8, and doesn't make hardly any power. Seems that 10. 4L would be able to make some serious snot, but I guess not... *LOL* 3116's are even worse... .

There's a reason I call Cat motors "Scatterpillars. "

I never said it was a great motor. For being a 200hp. N/A V-8 engine in that app. , it pulled better than I was expecting. This was after a head job though. It had bent valves, a few bad injectors, and some bad valve guides.

Before that it used TWICE as much fuel, blew ALOT of smoke, sounded horrible, ran hot and was absolutely gutless.

The owner of that tractor at that time also had a Deere 4455. That tractor I think had more torque at 150hp than the 2308 did at 200. At least it felt like it did.

Now , Now

The 3208 wasn't that bad of motor. A friend had one in a Ford one ton back in the seventy's. It had twin turbos and outran everything back then. The only problem is that they only lasted around 100,000 and boom... ..... :D The 3408 would outrun everything, same thing 100,000, boom.

In my opinion Cat makes some of the finest engines out there for heavy truck applications. The 425 -3406 can be beefed up to outpull about anything on the road and last forever. :D As long as diesel is inline, it is good. :D

Drove both

Drove both the Big Cam and the K series. Both good engines, but I would put my Buds 3406 against em both. It was gone through by an engine builder back east, nothing would/will go around that Pete on the mountain. :D

well thankfully all i have to do is get it running for 30 sec. and I pass that section... I think I can manage that.

Only 30 seconds??? come on now... wheres the fun in that? :p Just had to rib you a little bit there Russel. :) BTW which school are you attending?

The engine I rebuilt during my schooling had to survive a full dyno run--- yes the whole smash. warmup... . load testing... and cooldown. and not leak. and put out RATED HP and torque. LOL

That sucked... I couldn't turn up the power. Well I could have... but if the engine blew, it was an automatic F for the course. :--) :--) Figured I would save the grades and blow my own engines up. :D

Engine I had was a C8. 3. Put out around 350 horse and 800 lb/ft torque. (not sure of the specifics... its been 4 years) And yes, it had the P-7100.

Jeff

BTW... we had a group that was so tickled to have the big bad CAT 3406B... . well that lasted until they had to do the torquing of the main bearing caps. That was a riot... biggest torque wrench in the shop with both guys reefing on it. It took em a couple days to get it all done with. Torqued it wrong the first time and had to redo the whole thing.

sorry I miss typed its supposed to run for 30 min on the dyno.

i am attending North Central Kansas Technical College. Trying to get an Associates Degree with it. It's a 2 year program following traditional semesters. I couldnt bring myself to pay almost 30k for either WyoTech (like my buddies nephew) or Nashville Auto-Diesel. Besides this school was one of the few that offered the Assoc. Degree and the program itself was diesel only. Most of them wanted to teach automotive gassers too and or big airconditioning. I wasnt interested in AC for trailers and the such and could give a damn less about gassers. And on top of all that this school fit me being out in B F E and having small class sizes, only 11 of us for the engines group and then next semester we will swap with the other 14 in the power train group.

When I was in school we did 2 engines in engines class. I chose a Deere 6076A (7. 6L) for the first one and a BC 855 Cummins for the other.

Had there been time, I wanted to do a 3406B also.

The 855's and the 3406's are my favorite big truck engines, wouldn't mind having them in any of the farm tractors I use either. . :D

Sounds pretty much the same setup that I went through. I went to MATC in Madison WI thru the Top Tech program. It is a 2 year AAS Degree program and the class sizes were about the same as yours. Made it real nice for interaction with the instructors.

It was also a strictly Diesel program and covered everything including HVAC for trailers--- went hand in hand with the mobile HVAC stuff anyways.

Graduated and went into railroad locomotive maintenance... after being trained up for heavy trucks/equipment. go figure. :D Got to learn more about the RR and marine diesels. I think I learned more in my 17 months of RR work than I ever did at school or any truck place.

Oh yeah! I started monday too. Wilkes Community College. There's ten of us, with about 5-6 engines to work on. right now we all take turns disassembling different parts, cleaning and reinstalling them. Me and my partner took off, cleaned, reinstalled about 4 water pumps today. They saved the best for last, the MIGHTY CUMMINS, a Big Cam. I've been wanting to get my hands on it all week. It's rated 300, but the one on the stand is rated 400. That's what I'm talking about :D Also have 2 detroits-60 series, a International, CAT, and a L-10(?) there's also another 60 in the chassis/drivetrain setup.

Steve

we finally get to start tear down tomorrow, got the l10 book memorized :D

in the shop we are in first semester there are 3 L10s, a big cam, various cats, NO detroits :D and 2 mack e7 motors

the shop I am in next semester contains two ISXs, two ISMs, various electronic detroits and cats

there is also a specific heavy equipment engine lab that is all cat and deere

WE STILL HAVENT STARTED>... . we are still waiting on the freaking Snap-On people to get theyre s**t together. . sorry for the language I am just a little irritated. I paid a TON of money in tools and tuition and FUEL just to drive an hour every day one way to sit on my butt for 3 weeks and they still dont know when they will get them in. I can tell you this if I had gone through them I would have a lawyer involved. Because everyone one of those kids that went through them have a CONTRACT that states that EVERYTHING WILL be delivered by Aug. 11. and it is now Aug. 21 and NOTHING...

Russell

I do not mean to bash Snap-0n as they have a good set of tools. My irritation is with the particular Sales-Rep in Kansas. So again I am not bashing a Vendor nor sponsering another.

Onestacked, same situation up here! Thankfully I brought my tools up with me, we were the first group today done with paperwork and first group to start. Got the v/cover off, turbo, aftercooler housing and exhaust manifold off, just tearing down and inspecting for now
