so my wife can sleep back there while I'm driving. I DON'T want to build anything to fill the space betwen the rear seat and the front seat. I just want to be able to easily move the rear seat bottom forward about 2 inches when I want to! Am I going to have to design and build it myself?

Can't I use bailing wire and seat-of-the-pants engineering?

I could; but I want to be able to slide it back and forth and choose between riding and sleeping positions. Of coursre I COULD wait for the crew cab and end up with a Detroit Diesel or Cat engine instead of a Cummins! Besides, I want to spend THAT money on swampland in north Florida instead of a new truck!

for your slide mechanisms you might check out places like

<A HREF="http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=25048&prmenbr=76&path=76%202469%202485]http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=25048&prmen br=76&path=76%202469%202485">Jegs</A>

or

Summit Racing

If i remember correctly i have seen some brackets that are made for racing seats to be adjustable. They have the slide rails and levers just like the front seats would have. Don't know how much travel they have though. With these, it should not be to hard to design a frame for the seat bottom to sit on and then slide forward and back. Hey, i'm giving myself some idea's here!!!

You could probibally figure something out with some sliding rails, and clevis pins.
Might be a little rattly when driving though...
Maybe a bench seat sliding mechanisim attached to the bottom of the existing seat??
This would give you more than 2" of movement.
I'm just thinking out loud... . #ad

What about a small shelf (extension) that is hinged under the front of the rear seat. It would flip up to fill the gap between the rear seat and the front seats.

A few other guys had suggested that, but I would have to upholster it so that it would be comfortable to lie on, and that would add to it's thickness. There's barely any legroom in the back to begin with, and that would reduce it. If I can just get the part of the seat bottom that is under the seat back, out from under the seat back, it should be wide enpough for a 5'-2" woman to sleep on!

Jsimpson, just wanted to see if you had any solution in place. I have my canine friends who would benefit greatly from the ability to slid seat forward to lay on...

just a thought

If you are looking to level the seats so you can sleep. My dad had a shop make him some wedge shaped cushions covered with a similiar fabric as his seats. I've slept on them on hunting trips. works O. K. The real nice advantage to them is that they are in three pieces so if you had to pull them out it takes 10 secs.

Well I have slept in the back seat a few times and I can't really reccomend it. But I am about a foot taller than your wife. Anyway, what I did for my two dogs (80 pounds) is make some filler cushions out of stiff foam that sit on the floor. I don't worry about knee room because just the dogs live back there. Works well and there is a lot less growling about space back there. If I come up with any thing that works the way you want I will post a print.

We solved the problem. Bought a Tundra to replace the Buick; it sleeps pretty well back there. I bought another single cab Cummins, so rear seat room isn't a problem. When we travel with the Cummins, mw wife sleeps in the Lance!

I know it's an old post, but i stumbled on this searching for a solution to the torn seams on my drivers seat. :-lafHow about a power rear seat/fold down rear bed from a conversion van?My parents have one in the back of thier Ram/DMC conversion van.

Thats one thing i miss on my old ford. you lifted the bottom cushion at the back and folded it forward and then the back rest cushion folded down to make a flat area about 3' x 5'9". very sturdy. we made high density foam pads to fit and it was great to sleep on. i put a 4" lift on mine so i could store stuff underneath it, worked great. you might look at an old ford extended cab and see if you could convert it. i think a ford is wider than a dodge though. I wish dodge had that. robert
