traction - Look at this - ...

It's chained up all the way around... . the Diff's are locked - all teh wheels are churning... . and not much snow - but she's having a heck of a time..... sure make sme question if I want to put lockers on for snow----

He appears to be pushing up and packing the wet snow into wheel chocks in front of his front wheels. He appears to be using all available horsepower and still bogging which suggests he's digging in pretty good but unable to climb the 'form fitting' chocks he is making. Has to keep backing up and ramming them to break through.

You need to keep in mind pictures (or video) rarely give an accurate impression of the steepness of a climb. So figure if you were there in person that little hill would appear a lot steeper than it does in the video. Other considerations are the type of snow (is it loose and fluffy or mostly ice) and what the terrain under the snow is. In limited traction situations even a relatively small size rock might be just enough to hold a truck back on a climb. It is also hard to tell what tread, if any, his tires have. In that situation momentum is key. His stopping on the hill and then trying to start makes it much more difficult. When you loose forward momentum and keep on the throttle you dig in as Little Bill noted.

Lockers can only do so much, it always comes down to what traction is available where the rubber meets the road. As Flexiheep said in your other thread, tires can make a world of difference. Tires with crappy snow traction will still have crappy traction in snow with lockers.

Watch this video: YouTube - DODGE 6. 7L CUMMINS MEGA CAB ATTACKS HILL IN THE SNOW Note how at about 35 seconds his left front tire spins much faster then the right and how at around 38 seconds it quickly stops spinning, this indicates he has an open front diff. No locker yet he climbs that hill. Tires!

Maybe this is what you’re after for the snow?: YouTube - Yeti Concept Truck Plowing Snow

On the 1st try it looked to me like he shifted down. Then after he went over the hill, I saw how low the truck is, maybe he was bottomed out on the 2nd pass?

did anyone watch the Toyota vs unimog 3 video? Some wise cracker makes a comment about the Toyata,, had me rolling. . read teh replies part under teh video.

if the unimog, didnt have lockers,,, it would have failed harder.

You would think these things would be unstoppable. My company (OHIO BELL)demoed one that was to pull a cable plow thru a swamp. They even put on metal twist rims on all axles and it promptly got stuck. A local timber cutter brought out a skid steer and hooked to the UNIMOG and pulled it and the cable plow thru the swamp. Needless to say , the company went with the skid steer and the germans went home unhappy. MOE

Unimog

We have a guy local that builds them for different purposes, they are a real good rock climber, but situations differ and they seems to not be as versitile as advertised. .

In the snow low tire pressure so you can cause a float type of movement over the snow and dire, sometimes digging in through the snow to hard frozen ground isnt the best way. The lockers are needed in snow.

Unimog: Driver skill or lack thereof... . He's in a low gear which is not what you want in snow. You don't want your tires spinning.

Mega Cab: Impressive! Now that is a steep hill!
