Hay Haulin' with a First Gen

Air Bags or Sway Bars?

Nice looking combo. With that rig, that load is like sail boat fuel:) That truck will be able to haul some serious weight on the ball and be able to give the trailer some relief on some of his heavy loads.

Good point, Nick.

He can start moving his loads forward quite a bit. It's not going to bother that 23,000 lb. air ride suspension one bit.

Mike. :)

I think if it were me, I would ditch the gooseneck and get a regular flatbed or drop deck and utilize another 8 or 9 feet of deck space. That rear axle will probably pack as much weight as the two trailer axles.

Okie, what is the GVW of that truck? Is it a class 6 or 7?

Nick

Okay, I gotta ask. Why did you spec the Mercedes over the ISC? Does it have an engine or exhaust brake?

First, I search for "Pre Emissions" trucks. Most 2007 models back are pre emissions trucks. From the early 2000 models thru late in the decade, Cat engines dominated the SportChassis production. From around '04 on, MBZ started infiltrating that market. From all the research we have done, in that era, the MBZ was the clear choice. Regular reports of 500,000 miles to 1 million miles with nothing more than regular maintenance. Also, the MBZ engine's track record of fuel mileage seems to be better than Cat. While I am a fan of the 3126 series Cats, I am not a fan of the C7's.

What the folks at SC told me 2 weeks ago is Cummins power is back under the hood of the SC production. Early reports are good as to performance and fuel mileage. Caution: If you are considering an FL, the pre emmission trucks are sought after and bring premium dollars. Performance of the emissions trucks is less and fuel mileage is worse. That is why when you go shopping, you will see a glut of NEW SC's on the market in the years from '08 thru '10's.

C7's, no way would I have one either...

Just ask Ryder how much fun they had with those during the production run.

Mike.

I am sure that Detroit Diesel will release a 7 Litre engine soon, they don't want Cummins to have that market share all to themselves.

Should be called a DD7 or something similar.

They have no offerings since the 900 Mercedes was dropped and will not put up with someone else's engine under the hood for long... ...

i think it is a class 6. I am on the road now but not in my truck, I think the gvwr is 33K. Pulling that load from Houston through the hill country of texas going to odessa I got 10mpg. First bo-bo already, the abs light is staying on in the dash. FL dealer in san antonio said to drive it till I get a chance to have it fixed. Was the left rear wheel sensor, something about a cone or something. When I get a chance I want to weigh the truck full of fuel. I have a 32k air ride hitch to install when I get home. The guy that ran the code said if I could pull about anything I wanted with the truck. The place I unloaded the truck at the supt wanted to buy the truck and trailer. Hope to get back west to the house before Issac does.

Thats some serious good fuel milage if you are talking about the load that Barry posted a pic of. I am going to guess you were about 27-28k GCW. If I haul 24-25k, I only get about 8 MPG. That stretch of I-10 (west bound) will suck some fuel.

If you are 33K GVW, you are at the top of class 6. Probably running a 12k steer axle and 21k rear. Awesome truck, keep us posted:)

Okie picked up this rig in east Texas yesterday and is headed for the 4 Corners area north of Gallup, NM. He said it weighs 25,000 lbs. Have no idea of what it is or what it does.

As best as I could understand it is a portable hydro-blaster. Nintey gallons a minute. The bill of lading was wrong on the weight. Most of the time they are light. This one was heavy on the weight. (The trailer weighed 18,500 pounds by iself. ) On the scale at San Jon, New mexico I was grossing 32,000 according to the trooper that checked everything. After I unhooked at Gallup I weighed the rig with the load and then just the truck as a reweigh is a 1. 00 and I have been wanting to weigh the FL. Gross at the cat-scale was 31,780, I guess the trooper tolld the truth allowing for the fuel burned this made sense. had a pin weight of 3,960 lbs. After unhooking I went back across the scale with just the truck. It weighed 13,280lbs. Steer was 7320 and drive axle was 5960. On this trip with the load I got 8. 0. Drove faster than usual at 65-67, pretty good hills it spots on I-40. Filled up in Albuquerque headed to Oklahoma. Will get a check on mpg on this tank when I get to Checotah before heading back to the house.

After filling it up in Albuquerque I drove to my hometown of Checotah, OK. and filled it again. I got 11. 8 going across NM,and Texas into Oklahoma driving as close to 68mph as I could keep it. Sure was a pretty ride this time of year. On the way to Checotah I ate breakfast at Clines Corner and it was 49 degrees, felt plum cold but good after going through Dallas a couple of days before and it was 103.
