A story with a moral

Please explain to my wife the TDR aint facebook

These were sent to me in an email. I thought they were pretty cool and worth sharing! They look like they're trying to decide if it might be good to eat or not... :-laf

"Hmmm, the mother of all seal-snacks!"

Shot from the USS HONOLULU

Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine

at the Arctic Circle , 280 miles from the North Pole

Is there anything that scares a polar bear?

Those photos are obviously photoshopped, WE all know there is no ice anywhere near the arctic circle, Al Gore and his friends said Global warming has melted it all and the polar bears are all dying:)

The bears were bussed in, too. ;)

It would be kind of a shock, I think, to be the first guy to stick his head through the hatch and find yourself nose to nose with one of those critters!

I was never on a boat that made it to the North Pole but it would have been a memorable experience.

Very interesting photos.

I don't think there was much chance the Chief of the Boat was going to stick his head up through a hatch and be surprised by curious polar bears. The captain and crew knew they were there. The photos were obviously taken through the periscopes. See the crosshairs on the middle photo? I think they were using both periscopes. If my aging memory and the passing of time serves me, the attack scope was the one with cross hairs but I didn't serve on an LA class fast attack and may be forgetting.

After God-knows-how-long submerged and silent, and after navigating under the polar ice cap, which must be a little nerve-wracking, then finally breaking through the ice and seeing the sun and world above for the first time in possibly months; yes, Harvey, that would be a memorable experience to be sure.

That's a good point about the middle photo being through a 'scope, but the other two have photographic color and clarity to them. I'll bet they took turns climbing to the conning tower hatch and taking photos or at least seeing them in person. What a great way to get a breath of fresh air! I can't imagine the officers not letting the crew enjoy this.

Pretty cool photos, thanks for sharing Scott. And hats off again to the master of all knowledge, Mr. Harvey Barlow. I had to go back and view the 2nd photo to notice the crosshairs. Very cool photos. The bears have to be saying WTF to themselves.....
