how much can i tow?

Anyone out there towing an old military trailer? I have my eye on what I think is a model M101-A1. I believe the bed of the trailer measure about 6x9. Just curious if anyone here on the forum has experience with this or a similiar trailer. Looking to use it for an ATV trailer and general pupose utility. I hear they are incredibly rugged.

Thanks,

Brent

If the trailer has 900-16's yes its a 101 they tow sweet but the reg tires are not meant for anything over 45 mph I would switch to a reg tread tire and you shouldnt have any troubles . I have a 105 trailer that came with 20 in tires swapped over to 8 lug axle and I love pulling that thing it sat level when i had my lifted crewcab .

You sure have some interesting rides, would love to see some photos.

I will try and get some pictures of the trailer in the next few days and I will also pull up some of the pictures of my old crewcab . as soon as i can find away to fund it IE sell my bug I am going to build another crewcab but this time it will be a shortbed .

Simply,

Can you ID this trailer? This is the one I am hoping to buy... .

I was told the bed is about 6' x 9', and between the wheel wells measure just over 5'.

Thanks,

Brent

Kind of an FYI, these trailers usually sell on Government Liquidation for between $200 and $400. Then you see them on e-bay or in the military mags for used to be $8-900. I was looking at a mag the other day, the prices are up even more. I don't know what the people are asking, but hope this helps you.

Yes that is what they call a 105 trailer the weight it the drawback on that thing I believe empty it comes in around 2000 lbs they tow nice but unless you have a Big truck to pull it the payload will be small . That is the same trailer i have but mine has 16. 5 tires on it with the sideboards and gates

I looked into these at one point... they are typically air brakes and heavy... the pintle is really high too. I hooked to one, it was really wide too.

If I were to use one, I'd find a 7k eight lug axle (with electric brakes) and do a spring under to lower it slightly.

The one I hooked to already had the pintle below the frame... remember, these were meant to be towed behind big trucks with approximately 40 inch tires.

the 105's were ment to be towed with the 2 1/2 ton or 5 ton truck biggest tire they use to run was a 1100 20 now they have 21in wheel's on some of the newer stuff . But just like the new 21/2 ton's they are going to newer styles of truck's Mer.

Yes, and the new trucks have bigger trailers as well. One reason for that it we usually "cube out" a trailer (fill it's capacity) before we "weigh out" (overload it) with typical military cargo. The other is our truck are just more capable nowdays, powerwise. Look up M1082 and M1095. The M105 is a 1 1/2 ton rating for offroad, and will take up to 5500 lbs on road.

Well, I passed on the pictured trailer above, and went the Gov't auction route. And low and behold I won. Now I am waiting on the required forms to be accepted and forwarded on to the U. S. Gov't for final approval. I should have my trailer sometime in this lifetime, I hope. I ended up winning a M101-A1. A bit smaller than the one I originally posted. This one comes with side rails, bows, and a cover. Just hope it doesn't need too much work to get rolling.

I be you'll be happier with this one. It'll be easier to load a 4-wheeler and such since it sits lower. Congrats on the score!

Chances are, your trailer is in good enough shape to roll, as it probably just came from a unit that got the new trailers as a replacement.

I did save some money. The one I was thinking about buying from a private owner was $675. The trailer that I won at Gov't auction cost me $499 after all fees and taxes. Now I am just waiting for the paperwork to clear. I hope i will be less than 1 month, but told it can take up to 90 days. I will post some pics once I get it home... .

Alright, time to bring this thread back to life. I have received final approval and scheduled removal date is Monday, Aug 18th. I will get some pictures up once I get it home. I picked up a pintle hitch last night and pintle receiver tube today. It is just about show time and hope that the trailer is in good shape. I'll be in touch... .
