How many air tanks do you have? Do you have a wet or primary tank, then a dry tank?

I was working at the local town barn and got in a discussion about this. I had never realized that all big trucks have this setup. I knew they had multiple tanks, but assumed it was for quantity. Even single tank trucks have a divider in the tank, wet and dry.

It makes sense, keep the water out of your accessories!

I have one five gallon tank. I'm sure it would be better to use two. Mine works fine. I use a cheap impact wrench for use in the truck, so it won't be bad if some water got in it. Good tools stay in the garage. I worry much more about oil than water. The compressor seems to let a lot of oil out. I'm sure Brad Kilby can get you a better answer about a 2 tanks system.

Where did you mount a 5 gallon tank at? I've got a 4 and 5 and can't seem to find a place for either. Any pics?

I mounted my 5-gal tank under the bed on the passenger side, forward of the rear wheel. I have a long bed and there is enough room. A short bed might not have enough room though.

I'm using one 2. 5 gal tank and it will run an impact wrench just fine. I'm getting a lot of oil past the coalesing filter which is ok for the wrench but not good in the tires. Anybody have any ideas how to cure this?

I put mine in the same place Keith put his. Mine is a short bed also. It was a cheap 5 gallon portable tank from Wal-Mart, I think. Had someone weld some mounts on it and bolted it to the bed. I was a tight fit and a real pain in the you-know-where to mount by myself, but it worked. I'll try to get some pics.

why not just run an air dryer on the outlet of the tank. I got one from Home depot for my compresspor tank for my nail guns. was like 20 bucks. Just drain your tank every now and then to get any accumulated water out. Would this not work for some reason? Think it was a campbell hausfeld item, has a single filter with a clear housing.

I have a one gallon tank in the tool box mounted on the compressor, from there I run a hose to a five gallon tank under the truck on drivers side ahead of the rear wheels (dually). I have a 1/4" tap on the bottom of the tank going to a 12v solenoid valve. I have a push button on guage bracket to open and dump air/water as needed.

This is a problem with the converted AC compressors. Since the AC system is a closed system the compressors are designed to let a small amount of oil pass to the compressor outlet. I think that we will soon see big rig air compressor systems in use, they ARE made to compress AIR, not Freon.
